Fix Maytag Refrigerator Error Code PO

What PO actually means#

When power drops, the compressor stops and cooling pauses. Standard Maytag boards have no battery backup, so the board simply notes the interruption and shows PO when power returns. The sealed compartments hold temperature on insulation alone for a while — a full freezer stays safe for roughly 48 hours with the door closed, a half-full freezer about 24 hours, and the fresh-food section about 4 hours. Every time a door opens, those windows shrink sharply.

Check your food first#

• Freezer: put a thermometer inside. At 0 degrees F or below, everything is safe. If items still hold ice crystals, they can be refrozen. If they have fully thawed and sat above 40 degrees F, discard meat, poultry, fish, dairy, and prepared foods.
• Fresh food: if the compartment is 40 degrees F or below, items are safe. If it was above 40 degrees F for more than 2 hours, throw out perishables — raw or cooked meat, dairy, cut produce, prepared foods, and opened condiments. Whole produce, hard cheeses, butter, and unopened condiments are usually fine.

Clearing PO#

Press any button on the display to acknowledge it. On most models PO also clears itself after 24 hours of uninterrupted power. If your model has a clock, reset it once the code is gone.

PO with no outage you noticed#

If PO appears but you never lost power, suspect the supply, not the refrigerator:

• Loose plug — the cord may have pulled partway out when the fridge was moved or cleaned behind.
• GFCI trip — a refrigerator on a GFCI-protected outlet can trip from moisture or current swings. Refrigerators should not be on GFCI circuits; move it to a standard outlet.
• Overloaded shared circuit — if the fridge shares a circuit, combined draw can trip the breaker.

Prevent outage damage#

Keep the freezer at least three-quarters full — frozen water bottles make good thermal mass — and consider a power-loss alarm or plug-in UPS that alerts your phone. Ahead of a known outage, set the coldest setting a day early and add bagged ice so the compartments start colder and coast longer.

Worth-fixing verdict#

There is nothing to fix. PO is purely informational: if the refrigerator cools normally after you acknowledge it, everything is working correctly and no parts or service are needed. The only time to call anyone is if PO keeps reappearing with no real outage — then the problem is the outlet or circuit, which is an electrician's job, not an appliance repair.

How long is food really safe?#

Those windows assume the doors stay shut. In practice, safety depends on three things: how full the compartment was, how cold it started, and how many times the door opened during the outage. A packed freezer holds cold far longer than a half-empty one because the frozen mass itself acts as a giant ice pack, while a nearly empty freezer warms quickly. If you are unsure how long power was out, trust a thermometer reading over the clock — the actual temperature of the food is what determines whether it is safe, not the elapsed time. When in doubt about meat, poultry, fish, or dairy, throw it out; the cost of a discarded package is trivial next to the risk of a foodborne illness.

Is the refrigerator itself okay?#

A single PO after a storm or a tripped breaker says nothing bad about the appliance — modern refrigerators are built to ride out power interruptions and resume cooling automatically. Watch it for a few hours after power returns: the compressor should run, the interior should pull back down to temperature, and PO should clear on acknowledgment. If cooling does not recover, that is a separate problem (compressor, start relay, or control board) and no longer a PO issue — but PO by itself never means the fridge is damaged.
