The Broken Belt (Start Here)#
Open the door and spin the drum by hand. Zero resistance means the belt has snapped off the drum; a good belt creates noticeable drag. Because the idler spring releases when the belt breaks and trips the motor safety switch, don't be surprised if the whole dryer is dead rather than just quiet. Why a Broken Belt Can Kill the Whole Dryer#
It's worth understanding the idler switch, because it's what makes belt diagnosis confusing. The idler pulley is spring-loaded to keep tension on the belt, and its arm rests against a safety switch. While the belt is intact, the arm holds that switch closed and the motor circuit is complete. The instant the belt snaps, the spring pulls the idler arm to its slack position, the switch opens, and the motor loses power entirely — so instead of a motor running against a still drum, you get a dryer that does nothing at all. That is deliberate: it stops the motor from running on and overheating with no belt to drive. It also means a "completely dead" Maytag is just as likely a broken belt as a blown fuse, which is exactly why the hand-spin test — free, thirty seconds, no tools — is always the first move. A drum that spins with zero drag has lost its belt; a drum with normal drag still has one, and you look elsewhere.
When the Dryer Is Simply Dead#
A blown thermal fuse is the most common single-point failure on these dryers and, like a broken belt, can leave the machine completely dead — or tumbling without heat. The fuse is a one-time device on the exhaust housing behind the rear panel that opens when exhaust temperature climbs too high, almost always because of a restricted vent. Meter it: 0 ohms is good, an open reading means it blew, and test the nearby high-limit thermostat too. The critical part is the follow-up — a blown fuse always means restricted airflow or a failed cycling thermostat, so replacing the fuse without clearing the entire vent run from the dryer to the exterior hood just blows the next one.

Motor, Rollers, and Glides#
Drive motor. The motor turns both the drum through the belt and the blower wheel directly, and its bearings wear from lint and heat. To separate a motor from a drag problem, slip the belt off the motor shaft and apply power: if the motor spins freely with no drum load, the drag is elsewhere — a seized rear drum bearing or a worn front glide — but if it won't run unloaded, the motor has failed. A motor that hums without turning has usually seized or lost a start winding.
Rollers and glides. The drum rides on rear support rollers and a front glide or felt seal, and as those wear they add drag that a tired belt or motor can't overcome, along with thumping, squealing, or rumbling. Pull the belt and spin the drum by hand: rough, noisy rotation points at the rollers. Replace rollers in pairs and check their shafts for grooving, replacing the shafts too if they're worn.
Replacing the Rollers and Front Glide#
When rough, noisy rotation points at the drum supports, it's a drum-out job that pairs well with a belt change since you're already inside:
- Unplug the dryer, remove the top and front panels, and lift the drum out of the cabinet.
- Pull the two rear support rollers off their shafts and inspect the shafts for grooving — replace the shafts too if they're worn, and always replace rollers in pairs.
- Peel off the worn front glide strips or felt seal and fit new ones so the drum front rides smoothly against the bulkhead.
- Reinstall the drum, route the belt around it and the idler, and spin it by hand to confirm quiet, drag-free rotation before closing up.

Testing the Motor#
- With power off, slip the belt off the motor shaft so the motor turns no load.
- Restore power briefly and start the dryer: a motor that spins freely with the belt off means the drag was the drum, not the motor.
- A motor that hums but won't turn has usually seized a bearing or lost its start winding — replace it.
- A motor dead-silent with power applied and the belt off has an open winding or a tripped thermal overload; let it cool and retest before condemning it.
The Control Board#
Less often, the control board is behind a drum that won't turn — a surge or vibration-fatigued solder joint can stop it from driving the motor. If the panel is unresponsive or a code repeats after a reset, the board is the suspect.
