LG vs Miele Washer
These two barely compete. LG builds full-size 27-inch washers with 4.5-5.0 cu ft drums for houses; Miele builds 24-inch compacts with 2.2 cu ft drums for apartments and condos. LG is roughly 50% cheaper with twice the capacity. Miele lasts 50-80% longer. Decide on space first, then on how long you intend to keep it.
Two different machines for two different homes#
| LG | Miele | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | 27-inch full-size, 4.5-5.0 cu ft | 24-inch compact, 2.2 cu ft |
| Motor and drive | Inverter Direct Drive, the most advanced full-size washer motor, 10-year motor warranty | Heavy-duty components engineered around a 20-year, 10,000-cycle design life |
| Signature feature | Large-capacity washing at a lower price | TwinDos two-phase auto dispensing, CapDosing capsules, PowerWash 2.0 |
| Real-world life | 10-14 years | 15-20 years |
| Parts | Widely available, cheaper per repair | Miele-specific only, limited US service network |
If you have a laundry room, LG is the value winner. If you have a closet and want the machine to outlive two LGs, Miele.
LG: the drain filter is your maintenance job#
OE means the washer cannot drain, and the clogged drain pump filter behind the small door on the lower front is the usual reason. Coins, hair pins and lint balls collect there — clean it regularly and most OE calls never happen.
LE is a motor and stator fault. LG front-loaders run direct drive, with the stator surrounding the rotor on the drum, so a shorted stator winding or weakened rotor magnets leave the motor unable to hold speed. A failed hall sensor produces the same code. The other two are ownership habits more than defects: spider arm corrosion, where the aluminium casting joining drum to bearing shaft degrades from moisture, detergent and galvanic reaction with the stainless drum, and door boot mould growing in the rubber folds.

Miele: precision parts, proprietary diagnostics#
F34 and F35 are the door lock codes. Miele's lock uses a bi-metal element that heats to push the latch, so a failed bi-metal, a worn latch or a wiring fault raises them. These locks are precision components with no aftermarket alternative, which sets the tone for the whole machine.
F55 says the outlet filter is restricted. The multi-stage filtration exists to protect the drain pump, and cleaning it every one to two months keeps the code away. Circulation pumps are built for 20 years or more of service, but they are exclusive parts with zero aftermarket options and are reached from the front bottom of the machine. Electronic faults — board communication, power supply, sensor signal — need Miele's proprietary diagnostic software, because the display only tells you the general category. TwinDos dispensing errors come from corroded cartridge contacts or a stalled metering pump motor, and those too are read through the service software.
The verdict#
Space for full-size? LG, comfortably: bigger loads, cheaper machine, cheaper repairs, and a motor design that removes the belt and pulley from the equation.
Compact footprint, long horizon? Miele, provided you accept that every part comes from one supplier and every serious diagnosis needs their software. In exchange you get a washer that can still be working when a full-size rival has been replaced twice.
