LG Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement — LT1000P and LT700P
Replacing the water filter in an LG refrigerator is one of the simplest appliance maintenance tasks — no tools, no disassembly, under 2 minutes. But LG's filter system has a significant advantage over competitors that is worth understanding: LG does not use RFID lockout chips in their filters.
The No-RFID Advantage
Samsung and GE use RFID chips in their water filters. If you install an aftermarket filter without the chip, the refrigerator displays a persistent error and may refuse to dispense water. LG does not do this. LG refrigerators accept any filter that physically fits the housing — OEM or aftermarket. The filter indicator light resets manually and does not check for an RFID chip.
This saves consumers significant money over the life of the refrigerator. Quality aftermarket LG-compatible filters cost $8-$15 compared to $30-$50 for OEM.

Two Filter Types
LT1000P (current): Used in most LG refrigerators manufactured after 2017. Push-in design — insert the filter into the housing and push until it clicks. Located inside the refrigerator compartment, typically in the upper left corner.
LT700P (legacy): Used in LG refrigerators manufactured before 2017. Twist-in design — insert and turn clockwise to lock. Located in the same position as the LT1000P in most models.
Check your model number to determine which filter type your refrigerator uses. The two are not interchangeable.
Replacement Schedule
LG recommends filter replacement every 6 months or 200 gallons, whichever comes first. The refrigerator displays a filter indicator light when the replacement interval has elapsed. Heavy water/ice users may need replacement every 4 months.

Aftermarket Filter Quality
Not all aftermarket filters are equal. Look for NSF 42 and NSF 53 certifications, which verify the filter removes chlorine taste, sediment, and specific contaminants. Uncertified filters may not provide adequate filtration even if they fit physically.
Impact on Ice and Water Quality
A spent filter affects both water and ice. As the activated carbon becomes saturated, it stops removing chlorine and sediment. The first signs are a slight chlorine taste in water and cloudy or off-tasting ice cubes. If the filter is severely overdue, it can restrict water flow — slow ice production and weak dispenser flow are common complaints.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use aftermarket filters in my LG refrigerator?
Yes. LG does not use RFID lockout chips. Any filter that physically fits the housing (LT1000P or LT700P format) will work. Look for NSF 42/53 certification for quality assurance.
How do I reset the filter indicator light on my LG refrigerator?
Press and hold the filter reset button for 3-5 seconds. The location varies by model — it is usually labeled on the control panel or inside the door. Consult your manual if you cannot find it.
My LG refrigerator ice production has slowed. Is it the filter?
Very possibly. A clogged filter restricts water flow to the ice maker. Replace the filter and allow 24 hours for ice production to normalize.
