LG Refrigerator Er RS: The Fridge Section Sensor Is Dead
Er RS means the refrigerator compartment temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) returned an out-of-range resistance value. This sensor monitors the air temperature inside the fridge section and tells the board when to open or close the damper that controls cold air flow from the freezer into the fridge. Without it, the board cannot regulate fridge temperature.
How the Fridge Gets Cold
Most LG refrigerators have a single evaporator in the freezer. Cold air from the freezer is pushed through a motorized damper into the fridge compartment. The RS sensor tells the board the current fridge temperature. When the fridge is too warm, the board opens the damper to send more cold air. When it reaches the setpoint, the damper closes.
With Er RS, the board does not know the fridge temperature and cannot control the damper properly. Depending on the failsafe mode:
- The damper may stay open (fridge overcools — lettuce freezes, drinks are ice-cold)
- The damper may stay closed (fridge warms — food spoils)
- The damper may cycle on a fixed timer (fridge temperature fluctuates unpredictably)

Testing the Sensor
The RS sensor is a small thermistor mounted inside the fridge compartment, usually near the top or rear wall, sometimes behind a small plastic cover.
- Unplug the refrigerator
- Locate the sensor inside the fridge (check the tech sheet or look for a small capsule/bead with thin wires mounted near the upper vent area)
- Disconnect the 2-wire connector
- Measure resistance:
- At fridge temperature (37 degrees F): expect 7,000-9,000 ohms
- At room temperature (after removing sensor and waiting 10 minutes): expect 5,000-6,000 ohms
- Infinite = open circuit. Near zero = shorted. Either = replace the sensor
- If resistance is normal, check the harness continuity from sensor connector to main board
Sensor Replacement
- Unplug the refrigerator
- Locate the sensor inside the fridge (usually clips to the upper wall or a bracket near the air inlet vent)
- Pull the old sensor from its mounting clip
- Disconnect the wire connector
- Connect the new sensor (model-specific, $8-18)
- Press into the mounting clip at the same position
- Plug in. The display should show a plausible fridge temperature within 30-60 minutes as the sensor equilibrates
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Er RS vs. Er FS: Which Section
Er RS is the refrigerator (fridge) compartment sensor. Er FS is the freezer compartment sensor. They are independent sensors at different locations reading very different temperature ranges. Each fails independently. If both appear simultaneously, the problem is more likely in shared wiring or the main board than in both sensors dying at once.

Food Safety During Er RS
If Er RS causes the damper to stay open (fridge overcooling), food safety is not at risk but produce may freeze. Move delicate items (lettuce, herbs, dairy) away from the vent area.
If Er RS causes the damper to stay closed (fridge warming above 40 degrees F), food safety is at risk. Use a manual thermometer to check fridge temperature. If above 40 degrees F for more than 2 hours, perishable food safety guidelines apply.
The freezer continues operating normally with Er RS because it has its own sensor (FS).
Sensor Drift and Phantom Temperature Readings
Before Er RS formally triggers, a drifting sensor can cause the fridge to maintain an incorrect but seemingly stable temperature. The display shows 37 degrees F but a thermometer inside reads 42 degrees F — the drifted sensor reports a warmer reading than actual, causing the board to cool less than needed. If your fridge feels warmer than the display indicates, test the sensor resistance against the expected curve.

Common Misdiagnosis
If the fridge section is warm but the display shows a correct reading, the problem is not Er RS — the sensor is working. Instead, check the damper motor (it may not be opening even though the board commands it) or the freezer evaporator fan (Er FF). Er RS specifically means the sensor circuit is broken, not that the temperature is wrong.
