LG Fridge Door Latch, Cam, Handle Replacement
An LG refrigerator has no traditional door latch — the door is held shut by a magnetic gasket and guided by a cam in the hinge. So a door that will not stay closed is almost always the gasket, the hinge cam (OEM AEH73816901), or simple alignment, and the first thing to try costs nothing: level the refrigerator.
What Actually Holds the Door#
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Door slowly swings open | Weak gasket magnets or misaligned hinge | Replace the gasket or re-level |
| Door stops an inch or two short of closing | Worn hinge cam | Replace the cam (AEH73816901) |
| InstaView inner door pops open | Broken inner-door latch hook | Replace the hook |
| Handle loose or cracked | Handle screws or the handle itself | Tighten or replace (AEQ73110210) |
Three Things, No Latch#
The magnetic gasket carries a flexible magnetic strip that pulls the door to the metal cabinet frame; when it weakens or deforms, the door stops sealing. The hinge cam on French-door models pushes the door through the last few degrees so it self-closes, and a worn cam leaves the door hanging just short of shut, where the gasket cannot make contact. The one genuine latch on an LG refrigerator is on the InstaView Door-in-Door: the inner glass panel has a small hook and catch that holds it against the outer door, and that hook is the part that breaks when the inner door starts popping open.

Level It First — the Free Fix#
Before ordering any part, check that the refrigerator is level. An out-of-level cabinet lets the door drift open or keeps it from closing fully, and it is the single most common door complaint. Adjust the front leveling legs with a wrench, raising the front slightly so a half-open door swings closed under its own weight when you let go. Very often that is the entire repair, at no cost.
Replacing the Hinge Cam#
If leveling does not fix a door that stalls short of closing, the hinge cam is worn. The cam assembly (AEH73816901) sits in the upper hinge; with the door supported, the hinge cover and hinge come off to expose the cam, which you swap for the new one and reassemble. Work with the door held or with a helper, since the door is free once the upper hinge is loosened.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Handle and Inner-Door Hook#
The handle (AEQ73110210) attaches with concealed set screws, usually two reached from the bottom or side; loosen them, slide the old handle off the mounting studs, slide the new one on, and tighten — a ten-minute job with a Phillips or hex key depending on the model. The InstaView inner-door latch hook is a small plastic part that clips or screws to the inner door frame; when the glass panel stops holding shut, that hook has broken and is replaced on its own without touching the outer door.
Why the Distinction Matters#
Calling every LG door problem a bad latch sends you looking for a part that does not exist. Because the door relies on magnetism and a cam rather than a catch, the fix is usually free (leveling) or a specific component — the gasket, the AEH73816901 cam, or the InstaView hook — so identifying which of the three is at fault before ordering saves both money and a wasted trip. If the mounting studs in the door are stripped so a new handle will not stay tight, the stud inserts, not the handle, are what need replacing. Sorting the free fix from the paid part up front is the whole trick with these doors, and leveling is nearly always worth trying before a wrench ever touches a hinge.
