LG Refrigerator Control Board Replacement — Which Board Failed?
LG refrigerators have up to three separate electronic boards, and technicians frequently replace the wrong one because the symptoms overlap. Understanding which board does what is essential before spending $100-$280 on a replacement.
The Three Boards
Main control board: Located behind the rear access panel at the bottom or back of the unit. Controls the compressor, fans, defrost heater, damper motor, and ice maker. This is the most commonly replaced board.
Inverter board (Linear Compressor models): Converts DC power to the variable-frequency AC signal that drives the Linear Compressor. Located near the compressor at the back bottom. When this fails, the compressor does not run — symptoms mimic compressor failure.
Display/UI board: The panel on the front of the door with temperature controls, ice/water dispenser controls, and the digital display. When this fails, you lose display readout and control input, but the refrigerator may continue operating on its last settings.

Identifying Which Board Failed
| Symptom | Board |
|---|---|
| Compressor runs but no cooling | Main board (damper/fan control issue) |
| Compressor does not run at all | Inverter board or start relay |
| Display blank or flickering | Display board |
| Temperatures fluctuate wildly | Main board |
| Ice maker does not cycle | Main board |
| Defrost cycle does not run | Main board |
| Er IF, Er FF error codes | Main board sensing circuits |
| No communication with ThinQ | Main board WiFi module |

Tools Required
- Phillips #2 — for rear panel access
- 1/4 inch nut driver — for board mounting on some models
- Camera — photograph all wire connections
- Multimeter — for power verification
Main Board Replacement
Disconnect power. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall. Remove the rear access panel (lower back, 4-8 Phillips screws). The main board is in a housing with multiple wire harnesses. Photograph all connections, disconnect each harness, remove mounting screws, swap the board, reconnect everything.
After reassembly, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator to stabilize temperature. Re-pair with ThinQ if connected — delete the old device and add it fresh.

Inverter Board Replacement
The inverter board is near the compressor. Disconnect power. Remove the rear access panel. The inverter is a smaller board with heavy gauge wires to the compressor. Disconnect the harness, remove mounting screws, install the new board.
After replacement, the compressor may run continuously for several hours as the system reaches temperature. This is normal.
Preventing Board Failure
Surge protection is the single most effective prevention. LG refrigerator boards are sensitive to voltage spikes — a dedicated surge protector at the outlet ($25-$40) prevents the most common cause of electronic failure.
Also ensure adequate ventilation around the condenser area. Dust-clogged condenser coils cause the compressor to run hotter and longer, which heats the nearby main board and accelerates component aging.
Don't Void Your Warranty
Opening your appliance yourself may void the manufacturer warranty. Our repair comes with a 90-day guarantee, and we document everything for warranty compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG refrigerator runs but is not cold. Is the main board bad?
Possibly, but check the condenser fan and evaporator fan first. If both fans are running, the main board or inverter board may not be driving the compressor at full capacity. Also check for ice buildup on the evaporator coils — a failed defrost cycle (board-controlled) causes ice blockage.
Do I need to re-pair ThinQ after replacing the main board?
Yes. The WiFi pairing data is stored on the main board. Delete the refrigerator from ThinQ and add it as a new device after board replacement.
Is the inverter board covered by the 10-year Linear Compressor warranty?
No. The 10-year warranty covers the compressor itself. The inverter board that drives the compressor is covered under the standard 1-year warranty only. This is a common and frustrating distinction.
