Kenmore Washer Shakes and Moves — Troubleshooting Guide
A Kenmore washer that shakes violently or walks across the floor during spin is transmitting uncontrolled kinetic energy through its cabinet to the floor. The root cause depends on your platform's suspension design, which varies fundamentally between Whirlpool 110-series top-loaders and LG/Electrolux front-loaders.
Platform Suspension Differences
110-Series (Whirlpool) Top-Loaders
The outer tub hangs from springs at the top and rides on a snubber ring (friction dampening pad) at the bottom. The tub is free to swing laterally during spin. When the snubber wears smooth, nothing limits the tub swing amplitude, and the forces transfer to the cabinet (which transfers to the floor).
Additionally, 110-series washers have self-leveling rear legs that work by gravity. Lifting the front of the machine 4 inches and dropping it resets these legs. If the floor is significantly uneven, the self-leveling mechanism may not compensate fully.
796-Series (LG) and 417-Series (Electrolux) Front-Loaders
The drum assembly is suspended from springs at the top and constrained by shock absorbers at the bottom. Counterweight blocks (concrete) add mass to resist vibration. Three possible failures cause excessive shaking: worn shock absorbers, broken springs, or loose/cracked counterweights. Additionally, shipping bolts (if not removed) prevent the drum from moving on its suspension at all, transmitting 100% of spin force to the floor.

Quick Diagnosis
- Is the washer level? Place a spirit level on top. If off by more than 1/4 bubble, re-level the legs.
- Front-loader recently installed or moved? Check for shipping bolts at the rear panel.
- Push the drum/basket firmly and release. If it bounces multiple times, the dampening system is worn.
- Does shaking occur only with heavy/unbalanced loads? May be normal — redistribute the load more evenly.
Fixes by Platform
110-Series
- Re-level: Lift front 4 inches, drop to reset rear self-leveling legs. Adjust front legs with a wrench.
- Replace snubber ring: Access from underneath by tipping machine back. Part: Whirlpool W10820048 or equivalent. $15-35.
- Replace suspension springs: If a spring has stretched or broken, the tub hangs lopsided. $10-25 per spring.
- Anti-vibration pads: Install under all four legs to reduce floor transmission. $20-40 for a set.
796-Series and 417-Series
- Remove shipping bolts — 3-4 bolts through rear panel. 17mm wrench (796) or 13mm (417).
- Replace shock absorbers — test by pressing drum down and releasing. Multiple bounces = worn. Parts: $30-60/pair.
- Retighten counterweight bolts — use a socket wrench to check all bolts securing the concrete blocks to the tub. Snug tight.
- Replace broken springs — visually inspect from the top (remove top panel). A broken spring is immediately visible.

Floor Considerations
Sacramento-area homes with second-floor laundry rooms (common in tract homes built 1990-2010) experience amplified washer vibration due to floor joist flex. Solutions:
- Anti-vibration pads under all legs
- 3/4-inch plywood board under the washer to span multiple joists
- Dedicated vibration platform ($100-200)
FAQ
Q: My Kenmore 796 front-loader was fine for years and now suddenly shakes badly — what changed?
The shock absorbers have worn past their effective dampening threshold. This is a gradual process, but the transition from "barely dampening" to "not dampening" happens quickly. Replace all shock absorbers at once.
Q: I just installed a used Kenmore front-loader and it vibrates terribly — is it broken?
Check for shipping bolts first. Used machines are frequently sold with shipping bolts reinstalled for transport. Remove them before any other diagnosis.
