Tracing Drum Roller Noise on a Whirlpool Dryer

Bottom line: Rhythmic thumping or a grinding rumble from a Whirlpool dryer almost always comes from worn drum support rollers, a dry idler pulley, or worn glides. Identify the sound first, then plan on an intermediate 30-40 minute teardown to inspect and replace the roller kit.

Your Whirlpool dryer is built with specific components that differ from other brands, so match the noise to the part before ordering. Unplug the dryer completely. For gas dryers, shut off the gas supply valve at the wall connection. Allow 30 minutes cool-down if the dryer was recently running.

1. Name the noise before touching a screw#

A steady thump that speeds up with the drum usually means a flat-spotted support roller; a high squeal that worsens with heat is the idler pulley; a metallic scrape is a worn rear glide or bearing. Whirlpool controls also log the F#E# codes (F1 E1 board, F2 E1 keypad, F3 E1 thermistor, F4 E1 airflow) — clear any first so you are not chasing two faults.

2. Open the cabinet#

Free the top by pushing a putty knife into the front-corner seams about 2 inches from the edges to release the clips, or remove the two rear screws on older units. Lift the top, take out the two front-panel screws, hold the panel, and unplug the door switch so it lifts away.

3. Note the belt path for later#

The multi-rib belt loops the drum ribbed-side-in, runs down around the spring idler pulley, and ends on the motor shaft. Sketch it now — a mis-routed belt on reassembly makes its own noise and can slip.

4. Inspect the rollers, idler, and glides#

Slide the drum out and spin each support roller by hand. A good roller turns silently and freely; grinding, wobble, or a flat spot means replace the set. Check the idler pulley for a rough or noisy bearing, and look at the front drum glides for grooves or thin spots that let the drum drag metal-on-metal. Wipe each roller shaft and feel it for scoring, since a worn shaft chews through new rollers quickly and brings the noise straight back.

5. Replace the roller kit#

Swap worn rollers as a matched set so the drum sits evenly, and refresh the idler pulley if its bearing is rough. Disconnect wire harnesses before removing anything, and for thermal components (fuse, thermostat, cutoff), the wire terminals are push-on spade connectors — pull straight off, never twist.

6. Reassemble and verify quiet operation#

Reseat the drum with the ribbed belt face against it. During reassembly, you must push the pulley toward the motor with one hand while threading the belt around the motor shaft with the other. Refit the panels and run a short timed cycle with a damp towel — the drum should turn smoothly with the noise gone.

If the noise persists#

• Thump remains after new rollers: check the roller shafts and tri-rings for wear that keeps the new rollers off-center.
• Squeal continues: the idler pulley bearing is likely dry or failing — replace it rather than oiling it.
• Scraping at the front: worn drum glides let the drum ride on the bulkhead; replace the glide set.
