Bottom line: Thumping, squealing, or scraping from a Samsung dryer points to a worn drum bearing, idler, or roller — but a methodical 20-45 minute diagnosis, starting with the sound and the power supply, saves you from swapping good parts. Confirm the failure in isolation before you order anything.
Disconnect power before testing any internal components. For gas dryers, also shut off gas supply.

Step by step#
1. Observe and document the sound#
Before opening a panel, pin down the exact behavior: a rhythmic thump while tumbling, a continuous squeal that worsens with heat, a metallic scrape, or a rattle at certain speeds. Note any error code — Samsung codes are specific and diagnostic — and read it with the Smart Care app if one is present.
2. Rule out the simple causes#
Confirm the unit is plugged in and getting correct voltage. On an electric dryer, test both legs of the 240V outlet; a burned-out leg leaves 120V, so the controls work but there is no heat. Check that the door closes and latches, and clear the lint screen and vent, since a restriction changes how the drum sounds under load.
3. Test components systematically#
With the simple causes eliminated, unplug the unit and reach the suspects. For rear-access parts, remove the element cover plate (four to six Phillips screws) and test the thermal fuse (DC47-00019A on many models) for continuity — it should read 0 ohms — then the high-limit thermostat and the heating element for resistance. For noise specifically, spin the drum by hand and feel for a rough rear bearing, a dragging idler, or a flat-spotted support roller.
4. Identify the one failed part#
Use your readings to name the single failed component. Samsung appliances rarely fail in multiples unless a power surge hit them; if several parts read open, suspect a power event and also inspect the control board for damage. Ordered by how often they fail, the usual culprits are a worn drum-support bearing or roller, a dry idler pulley, then the thermal or heating parts. Match the sound you documented to the mechanical part that made it.
5. Verify before ordering parts#
Do one final check before buying. Disconnect an electrical component fully and test it in isolation, because a part wired in parallel can give a false reading in place. For a mechanical part, try a temporary reseat or adjustment to confirm it is the source of the noise. Getting this right matters because a bearing, roller, and idler can all produce a similar rumble, and swapping the wrong one leaves the noise exactly where it was.
If the noise continues#
- Thump after a bearing check: inspect the support rollers and idler for flat spots that only show up under the drum's weight.
- Squeal that tracks heat: a dry or failing idler pulley bearing, not the belt — replace the pulley rather than lubricating it.
- Scrape from the rear: a worn rear drum bearing letting the drum ride on the bulkhead, which needs the bearing kit rather than a roller.
- Rattle only at high speed: something loose in the blower housing, often a coin or button that worked past the lint screen.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.
