How to Troubleshoot an LG Front-Load Washer
An LG front-load washer that walks across the floor or bangs on spin is losing the ability to damp its drum. Working from load balance and leveling out to the shock absorbers (part 4901ER2003A) and springs pins down the cause in anywhere from 15-60 minutes depending on how deep you have to go.
A front-loader spins fast, so the tub is suspended on springs above and shock absorbers below to soak up the wobble of a wet, off-center load. When a damper wears out or a spring stretches, the drum swings farther than its clearance allows and slams the cabinet. The good news is that most "violent shaking" calls turn out to be free fixes — an unbalanced load or an un-level machine — so you check those before you ever open the cabinet.
It pays to run one deliberate test load before diagnosing hardware. Put in a medium, evenly spread load of similar items, start a spin, and watch closely: if the machine that walked across the floor with a lone comforter now sits still, the problem was balance, not a broken part. Only a washer that still shakes hard with a balanced load and level, locked-down feet has earned a look at its dampers, springs, and bearings.

Work from easy to hard#
- Rule out load distribution. A single heavy item like a bath mat, or a small tight load, throws the drum off-center. Redistribute or add a towel or two to balance it and re-run a spin before assuming a part failed.
- Check the machine leveling. Set the bubble level on top front-to-back and side-to-side; adjust the feet with the wrench until it sits solid and does not rock, then tighten the lock nuts so the feet cannot drift.
- Test the shock absorbers. With power off, reach the dampers below the tub and push the drum down by hand — it should resist and return slowly. A damper that offers little resistance or lets the drum drop freely is worn, and 4901ER2003A is the common replacement.
- Check the suspension springs. Inspect the springs up top for a stretched coil, a detached hook, or rust; a weak spring lets the drum sag and swing wider than the shocks can control.
- Inspect for spider-arm cracks. Shine the light on the three-arm bracket behind the drum for corrosion cracks; a cracked spider lets the drum run out of true, though this is a deeper failure than dampers or springs.
- Check for bearing failure. Spin the empty drum by hand and listen for a rumble or grinding, and feel for play; worn bearings add vibration and noise that leveling cannot cure.
- Verify the transport bolts are out. On a recently moved washer, shipping bolts left in the back rigidly couple the tub to the cabinet and cause severe shaking — pull them if they are still fitted.
- Check the floor condition. A springy or uneven floor amplifies normal vibration; a plywood pad or shifting the machine to a solid spot can settle a washer that tests fine internally.
