How to Replace a Whirlpool Freezer Thermostat

Step 1 — Gather model info#
Unplug the freezer. Find the rating plate — on uprights it is on the cabinet's left interior wall — and record the model number for parts. Then locate the tech sheet behind the base grille; it carries your wiring diagram and the exact diagnostic-entry sequence.
Step 2 — Read the stored codes#
Freezers with a display enter diagnostics by holding Alarm and Temperature-Down together for 3 seconds; models without a display use a door-switch sequence (3 presses within 10 seconds, held on the fourth). Record everything before clearing. Two codes from one system — say F3E1 alongside F3E2 — usually mean a shared cause such as a wiring fault rather than two separate failures.

Step 3 — Open up to the component#
Pull all the shelves, then remove the rear interior panel (6-8 Torx T20 screws around its edge) to reach the evaporator, defrost heater, and thermostat. The compressor lives behind the lower rear exterior panel, and the cold-control thermostat sits behind the temperature dial inside the cabinet.
Step 4 — Remove the failed part#
Photograph every wire connection first — that photo is your reassembly map. Release each harness by pressing its locking tab and pulling on the connector body, never the wires, then back out the mounting screws or brackets. Most internal fasteners are Torx T20, with some 1/4" hex at the access panels.

Step 5 — Prove the part is actually bad#
Before fitting the new one, meter the old. Heating elements read roughly 20-50 ohms and go open when burned out; switches and sensors should read closed or open at the right condition; and reading voltage at the connector confirms the circuit is feeding the part. This keeps you from swapping a good component when the real fault is upstream wiring or the board.

Seat the new component in the original's exact position and orientation, then reconnect each harness until it locks with a click. Snug the screws without cranking them — Whirlpool's plastic mounting tabs crack easily.

Step 7 — Reassemble and clear codes#
Rebuild the panels in reverse, restore power, re-enter diagnostics, and clear the codes tied to the repair. Run the part through the diagnostic forced-test, or simply operate the freezer and watch it behave.
Step 8 — Watch it for a day or two#
Give the freezer 24-48 hours. It should reach and hold 0°F within 24 hours, the defrost cycle should run without re-icing the drain, and frost should stay a thin film on the rear wall. If the original code returns inside 48 hours, the repair is incomplete or a second fault is hiding — re-enter diagnostics and look for new or recurring codes.
