How to Replace the Door Gasket on a GE Freezer

On a freezer the gasket does harder duty than on a refrigerator: the temperature gap across the door is larger, so any leak pulls warm, humid room air straight onto sub-zero surfaces, where it condenses and freezes. That is why a failing freezer seal shows up first as heavy frost near one corner of the door and a compressor that never seems to cycle off. Replace the seal#
- Run the dollar-bill test. Close the door on a bill so it is pinched at the seal, then tug. If it slides out with almost no drag, the gasket has lost its grip there — repeat around all four sides to map the dead spots.
- Inspect the gasket condition. Look along the rope for splits, flattened sections, hardened corners, and torn magnetic strips. On a freezer, pay attention to the bottom edge where meltwater and frost work hardest.
- Try reconditioning first. Warm a stiff, curled section with the hair dryer on low and press it back into shape; a thin smear of petroleum jelly on the sealing face can restore grip on a gasket that is merely tired rather than torn.
- Remove the old gasket. If replacement is needed, peel the gasket back to expose the retainer, loosen the screws or clips holding its lip just enough to free it, and work the rope out without bending the door liner.
- Install the new gasket. Tuck the new gasket's lip under the retainer starting at the top and working around, keeping the corners square, then snug the retainer back down so the rope is held but not crushed.
- Verify the seal. Warm any wavy sections with the hair dryer so they lie flat, close the door, and re-run the bill test all the way around — steady drag on every side means the freezer will hold its cold and shed the frost.
