How to Replace the Whirlpool Dryer Thermal Cutoff
The WP3387223 thermal cutoff sits on the heating-element housing of a Whirlpool dryer and opens for good once it overheats. Swapping it is a beginner-to-intermediate job of about 20-30 minutes, but you must clear the vent restriction that tripped it or the new one blows again.
The thermal cutoff is a one-shot safety fuse: when airflow drops and the element housing runs too hot, it opens permanently and the dryer loses heat. Because it cannot be reset, a no-heat symptom with a good element usually traces here. Before you disassemble, find the folded tech sheet Whirlpool tapes inside the console or to the rear panel, since it carries your model's wiring and component map.

Step-by-step#
1 - Confirm the diagnosis. With a multimeter on continuity, a good cutoff beeps and a blown one reads open. On electronic models an exhaust-thermistor fault often shows as F3 E1, and a general airflow warning shows as AF, both of which point at the same restricted-vent root cause behind a blown cutoff.
2 - Open the cabinet. On newer dryers, slip a putty knife into the top-front corners about 2 inches in to pop the spring clips and lift the top; older cabinets use two rear Phillips screws and slide back. Remove the two upper front-panel screws, unplug the door-switch harness, release the lower clips, and lift the front panel off its hooks.
3 - Free the drum. Reach beneath the drum, push the spring-loaded idler pulley toward the motor to slacken the belt, and slip the belt off the motor shaft. Lift the drum up and forward out of the cabinet so the rear bulkhead is clear.
4 - Reach the element housing. Take out the 6-8 screws around the rear panel perimeter and lift it away. The cutoff is the small two-terminal device fastened to the element housing (not the exhaust duct, which carries the separate thermal fuse). The housing lives on the rear wall inside its metal can.
5 - Swap the cutoff. Pull the two push-on spade connectors straight off rather than twisting, back out the single mounting screw, and lift the failed WP3387223 away. Fit the replacement in the same spot, seat both spades firmly, and re-drive the screw. A loose spade heats up and can melt, so make the connection solid.
6 - Clear the vent (do not skip). Detach and clean the full exhaust path from the dryer to the exterior cap. A blown cutoff is almost always downstream of restricted airflow, and reinstalling without clearing the vent simply blows the new part.
7 - Reassemble with correct belt routing. Lower the drum, thread the belt ribbed-side against the drum, down and 180 degrees around the idler wheel, then around the motor shaft so the idler spring pulls it tight. Refit the panels in reverse.
8 - Verify. Run a short timed cycle with a damp towel and confirm heat builds within a minute or two, the drum turns smoothly, and no burning smell appears.
If something is still off#
- No heat after the swap: the vent was never cleared and the new cutoff has already opened.
- Belt squeals: it is on backwards, so flip it ribbed-side to the drum.
- Drum will not turn: the belt slipped off the motor shaft during front-panel reinstallation.
- Dryer overheats: a thermostat or thermistor was left disconnected during rear-panel work.
