Whirlpool Dryer Heater Assembly: Causes & Fix

Safety. Unplug the dryer at the wall. On a gas model close the supply valve at the wall connection. If it has just run, give it 30 minutes to cool.

Read the fault before you buy the box#

Whirlpool machines with electronic controls report in the F#E# format:

The two airflow entries are the ones to take seriously here. A restricted vent is what cooks heater assemblies and blows thermal fuses, and fitting a new assembly into a blocked duct simply restarts the clock.

Find the tech sheet before you start — folded inside the console behind the control panel, or taped to the inside of the rear panel. It carries the wiring diagram and component locations for your exact model.

Everything on the rear panel#

Take out the 6-8 screws around the rear panel perimeter and lift it straight off. That single move exposes the element housing, the exhaust duct and the whole thermal safety chain, which is why heater work never needs the front of the dryer opened.

Two of those ride on the housing you are about to remove, so plan to transfer or replace them deliberately rather than discovering them still attached to the old can.

Doing the swap#

Disconnect the wire harnesses before anything comes loose. The thermal components use push-on spade terminals: pull them straight off and never twist, because a twisted terminal never grips the same again. Board connections have a locking tab that must be pressed first.

Fitting the new assembly is the same in reverse, and the one thing that matters is connection quality. A spade that only half seats builds heat at the contact point, melts, and becomes your next failure — so push each one home until it is fully on the terminal.

While the panel is off, check the 4-Way Venting arrangement. The exhaust can leave in any of four directions and exactly one should be open, with plastic caps in the other three. It is easy to disturb during rear panel work and easy to forget.

Proving the repair#

Refit the panel and run a short timed-dry cycle with a damp towel in the drum. You are looking for heat within 1-2 minutes of starting, which tells you the whole thermal circuit is intact, plus smooth drum rotation and no new noise.

If something is wrong afterwards#

• No heat after a thermal fuse replacement. The vent never got cleaned and the new fuse has already gone. That fuse sits on the exhaust path for a reason.
• The dryer overheats. The cycling thermostat or thermistor was not reconnected during rear panel work.
• Several parts failed together. That pattern suggests a surge event that also reached the main board.

One caution about the platform: EcoBoost heat pump models have no external vent and heat completely differently, so none of this applies to them. Refrigerant circuit work on those needs certification anyway.

Gas smell after working near the burner, a seized motor shaft with the bearing pressed into the housing, or a heat pump model? Book a repair — those need tools and certification the average garage does not have.
