How to Replace the Drum in a Whirlpool Dryer
A Whirlpool dryer drum only needs replacing when its interior is damaged enough to ruin laundry — deep scratches that snag fabric or dents that catch clothes. Getting it out means taking the front of the dryer apart, releasing the belt from the idler and motor, and lifting the drum free, then reversing everything with…
Most drum-related noise comes from worn rollers or glides, not the drum itself, so a true drum swap is uncommon — reserve it for a barrel that is gouged, dented, or rusted through in a way that marks or catches clothing. Before you start, find the tech sheet. Whirlpool folds one into every dryer, usually taped inside the console behind the control panel or to the inside of the rear panel, and it carries your model's wiring diagram, component locations, belt-routing diagram, and diagnostic steps. Having it open beside you turns the whole teardown from guesswork into a sequence you can follow, which matters most when it comes time to rethread the belt around the idler and motor.
Tools, Parts, and Safety#
Have a Phillips #2 screwdriver, a 5/16" nut driver, a putty knife, work gloves, and an assistant for handling the drum. The part is a replacement drum matched to your model. On safety: Unplug the dryer completely. For gas dryers, shut off the gas supply valve at the wall connection. Allow 30 minutes cool-down if the dryer was recently running. Plan on 60-90 minutes at an advanced difficulty.

Step 1 — Confirm the Drum Is the Problem#
Because a drum is expensive and awkward to change, verify the damage is really in the barrel and not a torn front felt seal or a worn glide snagging clothes at the opening. On electronic models, check for stored faults in the Whirlpool F#E# format — F1 E1 is a main-board communication failure, F2 E1 a stuck keypad, F3 E1 an exhaust-thermistor fault, F4 E1 an airflow restriction, and AF an airflow warning — none of which point to the drum, so a clean code list plus visible interior damage is your confirmation. On models without a display, let the symptom guide you: no heat is the fuse or element, no tumble is the belt or motor, and noise is usually rollers or a bearing rather than the drum.
Step 2 — Open Up the Front#
Start with the top panel: on newer dryers, slip a putty knife into the seam about two inches in from each front corner to trip the spring clips, then lift the top; on older units, remove the two Phillips screws at the rear edge and slide the top back. With the top off, take out the two screws along the top of the front panel, support the panel, and disconnect the door-switch wire harness. Remove the two screws at the bottom (or release the lower clips) and lift the front panel up off its lower mounting hooks. That exposes the drum, belt, and idler.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Step 3 — Release the Belt and Lift the Drum Out#
The drum rides on the rear bearing and is wrapped by the drive belt. Reach under the drum, push the spring-loaded idler pulley toward the motor to slacken the belt, and slip the belt off the motor shaft. With the tension gone, lift the drum straight up and forward out of the cabinet — this is where a second set of hands earns its keep, since the barrel is bulky.
Step 4 — Learn the Belt Routing Before You Reassemble#
Reassembly lives or dies on the belt path, so fix it in your mind now. The narrow multi-rib belt wraps around the outside of the drum with the ribbed side against the drum surface for grip. From the drum it drops down to the idler pulley and wraps around the idler wheel in a full 180-degree turn, then continues to the motor shaft and wraps around it. The idler is spring-loaded, so the hard part of every Whirlpool dryer reassembly is pushing the idler toward the motor with one hand while you thread the belt around the motor shaft with the other.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Step 5 — Fit the New Drum#
Wrap the drive belt around the new drum first, ribbed side to the drum, then lower the drum into the cabinet and seat it on the rear bearing and shaft. Guide the belt down to the idler, wrap it around the idler wheel, and thread it onto the motor shaft while holding the idler toward the motor. When you release the idler, its spring should pull the belt taut against the drum.
Step 6 — Reassemble and Verify#
Reinstall the front panel on its hooks, reconnect the door-switch harness, drive the screws home, and refit the top panel. Then run a short timed-dry cycle with a damp towel and check four things: the drum spins smoothly (belt and rollers right), heat arrives within 1-2 minutes (thermal circuit intact), there are no new noises (everything seated), and the AccuDry sensor ends the cycle when the towel is dry.

Whirlpool Dryer-Specific Notes#
A few Whirlpool details are worth carrying into this repair. The AccuDry sensor is two metal bars inside the drum that read moisture; clean them with fine sandpaper and alcohol every 2-3 months, since dryer-sheet residue coats them and ends cycles early. The Wrinkle Shield feature tumbles periodically after a cycle ends, and if it quits after a repair, check the timer-module connection. The 4-Way Venting system lets exhaust exit any of four directions with the other three capped — after any rear work, confirm the correct direction is the open one. Select EcoBoost heat-pump models have no external vent and an entirely different heating system, so standard heat-component steps do not apply to them. The idler pulley doubles as a safety: when the belt breaks the idler drops onto a switch that cuts the motor, so a dryer that suddenly stops and will not restart usually has a broken belt. And the thermal fuse always sits in the exhaust path — when it blows, a restricted vent is nearly always the real cause, so clear the vent before fitting a new fuse.
Troubleshooting After the Repair#
If the dryer runs but the belt squeals, the belt went on backward — flip it so the ribs face the drum. If the drum will not turn, the belt slipped off the motor shaft while you refitted the front panel; re-access and reroute it. Thumping after a roller change is usually a short break-in over 1-2 cycles, or a roller not fully seated on its shaft. No heat after a thermal-fuse change means the vent was never cleared and the new fuse has already blown. And overheating after rear-panel work points to a cycling thermostat or thermistor left unplugged.
Is It Worth Your Time?
A dryer not heating could be the element, thermal fuse, gas valve, igniter, or timer. Average DIY diagnosis: 3-4 hours with no guarantee of finding the issue. Our technician diagnoses the issue in about 30 minutes — same-day appointments available.

When Should You Call a Professional?#
EasyBear technicians serving Sacramento and the Bay Area carry Whirlpool parts and diagnostics on every visit. Call one if you smell gas after working near a gas burner, if the motor shaft is seized and the bearing is pressed into the housing (a puller job), if an EcoBoost heat-pump model has a refrigerant-circuit fault (EPA-certified work), or if several components failed at once and a power surge may have taken out the main board.
