How to Replace a Whirlpool Dryer Door Switch
The door switch is a safety interlock behind the front panel at the door frame. Release the top panel spring clips with a putty knife, take the two screws at the top of the front panel, unplug the door switch harness, then free the panel from its lower mounting hooks to reach the switch. Fifteen to twenty minutes,…
Two symptoms send you here. The dryer will not start at all even though the console lights up, or the drum keeps turning after you open the door. Both mean the switch is no longer telling the control the truth about whether the door is shut.
Before you open anything#
Unplug the dryer at the wall. On a gas model, close the supply valve at the wall connection as well. If it has just finished a cycle, give it 30 minutes to cool.
Then confirm the diagnosis rather than assuming it. On electronic-control models Whirlpool uses the F#E# code format, and none of those codes point at the door switch — so a stored code is telling you to look elsewhere:
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| F1 E1 | Main control board EEPROM communication failure |
| F2 E1 | Keypad stuck button |
| F3 E1 | Exhaust thermistor open or short |
| F4 E1 | Airflow restriction detected |
| AF | Airflow restriction warning — clean the vent now |
No display? Then read the symptom instead: no heat is the thermal fuse or element, no tumble is the belt or motor, noise is rollers or bearing, long cycles are the sensor or the vent.

Getting to the switch#
Top panel. On newer machines, slide a putty knife into the seam at each front corner about 2 inches in from the edge to release the spring clips, then lift the top. On older ones, take out the two Phillips screws at the rear edge and slide the top backwards.
Front panel. With the top out of the way, remove the two screws along the top of the front panel. Support the panel with one hand — this is the moment people let it swing and stretch the wiring — and disconnect the door switch wire harness. Take out the two screws at the bottom, or release the lower clips, and lift the panel up off its lower mounting hooks.
The switch is now in front of you at the door frame, where the door strike presses it.
The swap#
Pull the wire terminals straight off. They are push-on spade connectors, so never twist them — a distorted terminal never grips properly again.
Fit the new switch in the same orientation and push each connector fully home. A loose spade connector is its own future failure: the poor contact generates heat right at that point, melts the terminal, and you are back inside the machine in a few months. Firm and fully seated, every time.
Rebuild in reverse: front panel onto its lower hooks first, top screws in, harness reconnected, top panel down until the clips snap.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Proving it works#
Plug in and run a short timed-dry cycle with a damp towel. You want the drum turning smoothly, heat within a minute or two of starting, and no new noises. Then open the door mid-cycle — the drum should stop immediately. That is the whole point of the part.
If it still will not start#
Check the belt before anything else. Whirlpool hangs a safety switch off the idler pulley: when the belt breaks the spring-loaded idler drops, trips that switch and cuts power to the motor. A dryer that stopped suddenly and now refuses to restart is very often a broken belt rather than anything electrical, and the symptom looks identical from the outside.
Beyond that, a gas smell after working near the burner, a seized motor shaft with the bearing pressed into its housing, or several components failing at once after a surge are all past the point of a switch swap. Book a repair and we will bring the parts.
