Before touching anything, find the tech sheet: Whirlpool folds one into every dryer, usually taped inside the console behind the control panel or to the inside of the rear panel. Step-by-step#
1. Confirm the diagnosis#
Whirlpool electronic controls use the F#E# code format. Common ones are F1 E1 (main-board EEPROM fault), F2 E1 (stuck keypad button), F3 E1 (exhaust thermistor open or short), and F4 E1 (airflow restriction); AF is an airflow warning telling you to clean the vent. Failed gas valve coils rarely throw a code — the tell is a burner that ignites then drops out, so the dryer tumbles cool. On dial models, no-heat points at the thermal fuse or element while no-tumble points at belt or motor.
2. Open the cabinet#
Free the top by pushing a putty knife into the front-corner seams (about two inches from each edge) to release the spring clips, then lift; older units use two rear screws and slide back. With the top up, take the two screws at the top of the front panel, disconnect the door-switch harness, release the lower screws or clips, and lift the front panel off its hooks. If you need the drum out, push the idler pulley toward the motor to slacken the belt, slip it off the motor shaft, and lift the drum out.
3. Note the belt routing before anything moves#
The flat multi-rib belt wraps the drum with its ribbed side against the drum for grip, drops down to the spring-loaded idler pulley in a 180-degree wrap, and carries on around the motor shaft. Getting this exact path back is the trickiest part of reassembly, so photograph it now.
4. Reach and swap the gas valve coils#
The burner assembly sits in the lower front area, behind the lower panel or below the drum. The two solenoid coils sit on top of the gas valve with a bracket and one or two screws. Pull their push-on spade connectors straight off — never twist — release the bracket, lift the old coils, and set the W10847984 replacements in the same orientation. Reseat each spade connector firmly; a loose one overheats at the contact and can melt.
5. Reassemble and verify#
If the drum came out, reinstall it with the belt ribbed-side to the drum, thread the belt through the idler, and wrap the motor shaft so the idler spring pulls it tight. Refit the panels in reverse. Run a short timed-dry cycle with a damp towel and confirm the drum spins smoothly, heat arrives within a minute or two, and it does not drop out mid-cycle.
Troubleshooting after the repair#
- Belt squeals: it went on backwards — flip it so the ribs face the drum.
- Drum will not turn: the belt slipped off the motor shaft during front-panel reinstallation. Re-access and reroute.
- Still no heat: on a gas dryer, confirm the supply valve is open and the igniter glows; the coils only open the valve once the igniter draws enough current.
