Step-by-Step Instructions#
Step 1 — Confirm it is the rollers#
A worn roller makes a low, rhythmic rumble that gets worse as the dryer heats and the parts expand. Rule out other noise sources first: a squeal usually means the belt or idler, a scraping means the drum is rubbing the bulkhead, and a thump can be the rollers or a bad rear bearing. On models with electronic controls you may also see the F#E# format — F1 E1 (main board EEPROM communication), F2 E1 (stuck keypad), F3 E1 (exhaust thermistor open/short), F4 E1 (airflow restriction), or AF (airflow warning). None of those are roller codes, but clearing unrelated faults first keeps the diagnosis clean.
Step 2 — Open the cabinet#
Top panel: on newer Whirlpool dryers, slip a putty knife into the seam at the front corners, about 2 inches in from each edge, to release the spring clips, then lift; older models use 2 rear Phillips screws and slide back. Front panel: with the top off, remove the 2 screws at its top, support the panel, disconnect the door-switch harness, then take out the 2 bottom screws (or release the lower clips) and lift the panel off its hooks. That exposes the drum and the front of the roller path.
Step 3 — Lift the drum out#
The drum rides the rear rollers wrapped in the drive belt. Reach under, push the idler pulley toward the motor to release belt tension, and slip the belt off the motor shaft. With the belt loose, lift the drum straight up and forward out of the cabinet and set it aside. The rear rollers are now visible on their shafts on the rear bulkhead; some models also carry two rollers at the front.
Step 4 — Remove the old rollers#
Each roller is retained by a snap ring (a tri-ring or E-clip) on its shaft. Work the ring off with snap-ring pliers — mind that it can spring loose — then slide the roller off the shaft. Spin each old roller by hand: any grinding, wobble, or flat spot confirms it is worn. Wipe the shafts clean of old grease and debris. Replace all the rollers in the W10460935 kit at once, even if only one sounds bad, because the others are the same age.
Step 5 — Fit the new rollers#
Put a light film of silicone lubricant on each shaft — just enough to ease the fit and quiet the bearing, never so much that it flings onto the drum. Press each new roller fully onto its shaft and secure it with a fresh snap ring, confirming the ring seats in its groove. Spin each new roller to check it turns freely and true.
Step 6 — Reinstall the drum and belt#
Set the drum back on the rear rollers with the belt draped over it, ribbed side against the drum. Thread the belt down and around the idler pulley, push the idler toward the motor to make slack, and loop the belt around the motor shaft — the trickiest moment of the job, done with one hand on the idler and one on the belt. Release the idler so its spring pulls the belt tight, then spin the drum by hand a full turn to confirm it rides smoothly on the new rollers and the belt tracks.
Step 7 — Reassemble and test#
Refit the front panel (bottom hooks first, then the top screws and the door-switch harness) and the top panel. Plug in and run a short timed-dry cycle: the rumble should be gone, the drum should turn smoothly and quietly, and heat should come up within 1-2 minutes. If a new noise appears, a roller is not fully seated or a snap ring is loose.
Whirlpool Dryer-Specific Technical Notes#
- New rollers need a break-in: a faint thumping for the first 1-2 cycles is normal as the new bearings seat; a persistent thump means one roller is not fully home on its shaft.
- Rear drum bearing: if the rumble survives new rollers, the rear drum bearing (glide or ball) is worn — it carries the back of the drum and wears alongside the rollers.
- Belt direction: the ribbed side always faces the drum; installed backwards, the belt squeals.
- Idler pulley spring: when the belt breaks the idler drops onto a switch that cuts motor power, so a dryer that suddenly quits and will not restart usually has a broken belt, not a dead motor.
- AccuDry sensor: the two metal bars inside the drum read moisture; clean them with fine sandpaper and alcohol every 2-3 months so dryer-sheet residue does not end cycles early.
