Before you start#
- Tools: a voltage tester (a non-contact tester plus a multimeter), wire strippers, a Phillips #2 screwdriver, a flat screwdriver.
- Parts: a NEMA 14-30 (or 10-30) dryer receptacle, and 10/3 NM cable if you are running or extending the circuit.
- Safety: Switch OFF the dryer's double-pole breaker and confirm the receptacle is dead with a tester before touching any conductor. Never work a 240-volt circuit live.
Step by step#
- Identify what you have and what you want. Four slots at the wall is a NEMA 14-30 (4-prong, with a dedicated ground — current code); three slots is a NEMA 10-30 (3-prong, older homes). Modern practice is a 4-prong receptacle on a circuit with a separate ground conductor, and the dryer cord must match whatever the receptacle is.
- Kill and verify the power. Turn off the dryer's dedicated double-pole breaker in the panel, then confirm zero voltage at the receptacle with your tester across every slot combination before proceeding.
- Open the receptacle. Remove the cover plate and the mounting screws, then ease the old receptacle out of its box. Note which conductor lands where — the two hot legs on the outer terminals, the neutral on the center terminal, and, on a 4-prong, the ground on the green terminal.
- Check the cable in the box. A 4-prong receptacle needs a cable with two hots, a neutral, AND a separate ground (10/3 with ground). If the box has only two hots and a bare or neutral conductor (older 10/2 setups), a true 4-prong upgrade requires running a proper grounded circuit — do not fake a ground by bonding neutral at the receptacle.
- Wire the new receptacle. Land the two hot conductors on the hot terminals, the neutral on the neutral terminal, and the ground on the ground terminal, tightening each so no bare copper shows past the lug. Keep the bends neat so the receptacle seats back without pinching a wire.
- Mount and cover. Fold the conductors into the box, screw the receptacle to the box, and refit the cover plate.
- Test. Restore the breaker and check the receptacle with the meter — you should read the rated 240-volt line-to-line and the expected line-to-neutral values — then plug in the matching dryer cord and run a short cycle to confirm normal operation.

If something is off#
- Breaker trips when the dryer starts: a hot conductor is on the wrong terminal or a conductor is shorting in the box — kill the power and recheck every landing against the receptacle's diagram.
- Dryer runs but you feel a tingle on the cabinet: the ground and neutral scheme is wrong for the setup — a 4-prong receptacle must have a real, separate ground, not a neutral-to-ground bond.
- The cord will not fit the receptacle: the cord and receptacle configurations do not match (a 4-prong cord will not enter a 3-prong receptacle) — match them.
- The plug fits loosely: the receptacle contacts are worn or the part is low grade — fit a quality receptacle rated for the circuit.
When to call an electrician#
Bring in a licensed electrician if the box has no separate ground and you want a 4-prong outlet, if the wiring is aluminum, if the box or conductors show heat damage, or if you are not fully confident verifying the circuit is dead. A miswired 240-volt dryer outlet is a shock and fire hazard.
