Step-by-Step Belt Replacement#
Step 1: Unplug, and get the top out of the way#
Pull the cord from the wall rather than switching a breaker — you want to be able to see that the machine is dead, and on a belt job you will have both hands inside the cabinet.
The top comes off before anything else because the front panel's upper fasteners hide under it. Slide a putty knife into the seam at each front top corner, about 2 inches in from the edge, and push straight back until you feel the spring clip let go; there is one at each corner and they release with a distinct pop rather than gradually. The panel then hinges up and back on its rear edge, and most people find it happy to stay there.
If you push and nothing gives, stop and look at the rear edge before pushing harder. Older machines have no clips at all: two Phillips screws at the back hold the top down, and the panel slides rearward once they are out. Levering at the corners on one of those achieves nothing except a dented seam.
Step 2: Free the front panel without straining the door harness#
With the top raised, two screws along the top edge of the front panel are now visible. Take those out first while the panel is still supported by its lower fixings — it is far easier to work top-down than to hold a loose panel and hunt for screws.
Before the panel comes away, unplug the door-switch harness. The lead is short, and a panel allowed to swing on it puts the whole load onto a small connector; that is how the connector or the switch behind it gets damaged on an otherwise clean job. Press the locking tab, pull the connector straight off, and let the lead hang.
Then remove the two lower screws, or release the lower clips on the years that use them, and lift the panel upward off its mounting hooks. It does not pull forward — it hangs, and lifting is what releases it. Set it face-up somewhere it will not get walked on; the door glass is in it.
Step 3: Photograph the Belt Path, Then Release Tension#
Before disturbing anything, note how the belt runs and take a photo. The belt wraps the drum with its ribbed side against the drum surface, drops to the idler pulley, wraps 180 degrees around the idler wheel, and continues to the motor shaft. Reach under the drum, push the idler toward the motor to slacken the belt, and slip the belt off the motor shaft.
Step 4: Lift the Drum and Remove the Old Belt#
With tension released, lift the drum straight up and forward out of the cabinet. Slide the old belt off the drum and hold it against the new belt to confirm the width and rib count match.
Step 5: Position the New Belt on the Drum#
Lay the new belt around the drum in the same spot the old one occupied, ribbed side facing the drum surface. The ribs against the drum are what give the belt grip; installed backwards with the smooth side in, it will squeal on the first cycle.
Step 6: Reinstall the Drum and Route the Belt to the Motor#
Set the drum back on its rear support. With one hand push the idler pulley toward the motor, and with the other thread the belt around the motor shaft. Release the idler slowly so its spring pulls the belt taut against the drum. This one-hand-on-the-idler, one-hand-on-the-belt move is the trickiest part of the job.
Step 7: Turn the Drum by Hand to Verify#
Rotate the drum a full turn by hand before closing up. It should spin smoothly and the belt should track centered on the drum without walking to one side. If the belt slips off the motor shaft, it was never seated — reroute it now, not after the cabinet is back together.
Step 8: Reassemble and Run a Test Cycle#
Reinstall the front panel on its lower hooks, reconnect the door-switch harness, and replace the screws. Lower the top panel until the clips snap, or reinstall the rear screws. Plug in and run a short timed cycle: the drum should turn immediately and run quietly.

- Belt squeals on the first run: it is installed backwards, smooth side against the drum. Flip it so the ribs face the drum.
- Drum will not turn after reassembly: the belt slipped off the motor shaft during front-panel reinstallation. Re-access and reroute it.

While the drum is out: the four things worth five minutes each#
The drum is the hard part of this job and it is already on your laundry-room floor. Four checks cost almost nothing now and are a whole repeat teardown later.
Turn each drum roller by hand. They should spin smoothly and quietly with no side-to-side play on the shaft. A roller with a flat spot you can feel through your fingertips is the same roller that produces a thump once per drum revolution when the machine runs, and it will outlive the new belt.
Spin the idler wheel itself. It should turn freely on its bushing. An idler that drags is not just noisy — it is being pulled against the belt by its own spring and grinding the belt's ribs away, which is one of the ways a new belt fails early.
Look at the front glides. These are the low-friction pads the front of the drum rides on, and worn ones let the drum drop onto the bulkhead. The sound they make is a scrape that changes as the load shifts, quite unlike a roller's regular thump.
Vacuum the cabinet floor. Years of lint collect under the drum where nothing reaches, and the drum coming out is the only time anyone sees it. It is also, in a dryer, exactly the material you least want sitting near a heating element.
None of these takes more than a few minutes with the drum already out, and all four are effectively inaccessible once it is back in.

Rib count and rib spacing matter as much: a belt of the right circumference with the wrong pitch rides on the tips of its ribs rather than seating in the motor pulley's grooves, grips poorly, and wears out in a fraction of its life while making a noise that sounds like a bearing.
Compare old against new before fitting. Lay them side by side and check three things — overall length, width, and the ribs themselves. Two out of three matching is the trap, because the two that match are the two you can see at a glance.
Look for storage kinks. Belts are shipped folded or coiled tight, and a sharp crease that has set will thump once per revolution until it works itself out, which sounds exactly like a flat-spotted roller. Let a new belt hang or lie flat for an hour before fitting if it arrives with a hard fold in it.
Check the ribbed face is genuinely the inside. On a narrow multi-rib belt the difference between the faces is less obvious than it sounds, particularly under poor light inside a cabinet. Work out which face goes to the drum while the belt is in your hands and in daylight, not while you are lying on a laundry-room floor.
And keep the old one until the first full load is done. Not to refit, but to compare against if something sounds wrong — the old belt is the only sample you have of what was definitely the right size for your machine.

This is the one post-repair symptom that reads as a disaster and usually is not.
The idler pulley on a Whirlpool sits on a spring-loaded arm, and that arm does two jobs: it tensions the belt, and it holds a safety switch closed. When the belt breaks, the spring pulls the arm down, the switch opens, and the motor loses power — which is why a snapped belt so often presents as a completely dead dryer rather than a humming one.
The consequence after a repair is the mirror image. If the new belt is on but slack — not properly seated on the motor shaft, or routed so the idler cannot take up its travel — the arm never lifts far enough to close that switch again. The belt is fitted, the drum is in, everything looks right, and the dryer is as dead as it was before you started.
So before the panels go back on, turn the drum by hand a full revolution and watch the idler arm. It should be pulled up and holding tension the whole way round, not sitting at the bottom of its travel. If it is sitting low, the belt is not doing its job yet, and putting the cabinet back together will only mean opening it again.
