Why the fourth wire exists#
Older dryer circuits bonded neutral and ground together and ran three wires. Current code separates them, so the modern connection carries a dedicated ground back to the panel and the cabinet never relies on the neutral for its ground path. That is the entire difference, and it is why a cord swap is not just a plug swap — the terminal block inside the dryer has to be rearranged to match.
The terminal block, step by step#
The block sits behind a small cover plate low on the rear panel, held by one or two screws. Take the cover off and you will see three terminals with a metal ground strap linking the centre terminal to the cabinet.
- Remove the old cord: back off the terminal screws, free the strain relief in the cabinet opening, and pull the cord clear.
- Fit the new strain relief into the opening first, then feed the SRDT cord through it. Doing this in the other order means taking the connections apart again.
- Remove the ground strap. With a 4-prong cord, the cabinet gets its ground from the cord's green or bare conductor, not from the neutral. Leaving the strap in place bonds neutral to the cabinet and defeats the reason for the fourth wire.
- Land the two hot conductors on the outer terminals, the white neutral on the centre terminal, and the ground conductor on the cabinet ground screw where the strap used to sit.
- Tighten every terminal screw properly and tug each conductor. A loose terminal generates heat at the contact point, melts, and becomes the next fault.
- Clamp the strain relief onto the cord jacket, not onto the individual conductors, and refit the cover plate.

While the back is open#
The rear panel is also where Whirlpool's thermal and heating parts live, and the tech sheet that documents them is folded inside the console or taped to the inside of the rear panel — your model's wiring diagram, component locations and diagnostic procedures are all on it. Worth photographing before you close up.
If the dryer is not heating rather than not powering up, that is a different circuit. Whirlpool electronic models report faults in the F# E# format, and a handful cover most calls:

Models without a display speak in symptoms instead: no heat means the thermal fuse or element, no tumble means the belt or motor, noise means rollers or a bearing, and long cycles mean a sensor or a restricted vent.
Test before you push it back#
Plug in and start a short timed cycle. The drum should turn smoothly and heat should arrive within a minute or two. No power at all after a cord swap almost always means a hot conductor is not fully clamped under its terminal screw, so unplug and check the block again rather than the breaker.
