How to Replace a Samsung Dryer Thermal Fuse

The part that matters most is not on the parts list: a blown thermal fuse is a symptom of restricted airflow. Clear the vent, or the new fuse opens too.

Safety: unplug the dryer. On gas models (DVG prefix) shut the gas supply valve, and wait 5 minutes for capacitor discharge before touching anything inside.

Step 1 — confirm the diagnosis with numbers#

Test the element and the thermal devices separately: a good element plus no heat points straight at the fuse or thermostat.

Anything reading open circuit has failed. The symptoms that fit this repair are a dryer running without heat while the element has continuity, or one that overheated and produces no heat after cooling. Step 2 — order the right part#

The model number decides compatibility: find it on the label inside the door frame or the rear rating plate. DV-prefix models are electric, DVG-prefix gas. Order from Samsung Parts direct, an authorised retailer, or a reputable parts supplier.

Step 3 — get to the component#

Rear panel — heating element, thermal fuse, thermostat, motor blower. Remove the 4-6 Phillips screws from the rectangular element cover plate on the upper rear; the housing slides out as a complete assembly with the thermal devices attached.

Front panel — belt, idler pulley, drum rollers, bearing slides, door parts. Take the top off (2 Phillips screws at the rear, then spring clips with the putty knife), disconnect the door switch wires, and remove the front panel screws, 2 at the top and possibly 2 at the bottom. Support the drum with a block first.

Step 4 — swap it#

Press the tab, pull each wire connector straight out, remove the mounting screws and lift the part away. For an element, the whole housing slides out once the wires are off the terminal block.

Fit the new part in the original orientation. Samsung builds in alignment features — tabs, notches, keyed connections — so a part that will not seat is going in wrong. Secure the hardware before connecting wires.

If you are in there for a belt: around the drum flat side in, ribbed side out; lower the drum in; route the belt under the idler and around the motor shaft; release the idler arm to tension it. The ribbed side contacts both the idler wheel and the motor shaft.

Step 5 — test before closing up#

With all panels and covers back on, reconnect power and run a timed heat cycle for 5 minutes. Check for heat at the exhaust vent, smooth drum rotation, no unusual noise and no error codes; after belt or roller work, listen across the full speed range. Then power off and finish reassembly.

If it fails again#

• Still no heat after the fuse. The overheating cause remains. Clean the entire exhaust vent; if it is genuinely clear, a cycling thermostat stuck closed is heating continuously and tripping the protection.
• Belt breaks within weeks. A seized idler pulley bearing or binding drum rollers are overloading it — replace idler and rollers together.
• New noise after roller work. The roller is not fully seated on its axle, or the retaining hardware is loose.
• Breaker trips after an element swap. Either a defective new element, which is rare, or the housing contacting the cabinet at a grounding point. Check the clearance.

Prevent the repeat#

Clean the moisture sensors monthly with rubbing alcohol so long dry times stop stressing the heating system. Descale the Multi-Steam nozzle quarterly if you use steam cycles. Clean the lint duct path every 6 months — lint past the screen collects near the element, a fire risk that also trips the thermal devices. Keep a spare belt if the dryer is over 4 years old, since Samsung belts are thinner than most. Run Smart Care diagnostics periodically to catch vent restrictions early.
