Repair KitchenAid Dryer Heating Element Wires
On a KitchenAid electric dryer the heat usually stops at the element wiring, not inside the element itself. Cut the burnt spade terminal off, crimp on a replacement rated 450F or higher, and the circuit is whole again. Intermediate work, 25-40 minutes, using a 1/4-inch hex nut driver, a Phillips #2 screwdriver, wire…
Before you open anything: unplug the dryer, then confirm zero voltage at the element terminals with a multimeter. If a cycle has just finished, wait 30 minutes — the element area holds heat long after the drum feels cool.
Why the leads burn before the coil does#
KitchenAid uses the same rear-mounted element canister as Whirlpool, and the element is fed by high-temperature leads ending in spade terminals. A spade that is not pushed fully home arcs each time the element energises. That arc is small but ferociously hot, and it eats the terminal and the wire behind it while the coil stays perfectly serviceable. That is the whole reason a heater wire repair kit exists: the cheap end of the circuit is what fails.

Read the damage before you buy a part#
Take the rear panel off — 8 to 12 hex screws around the perimeter — and the canister sits on the rear bulkhead with two terminals showing on the outside. Then match what you see against this list:
| What you find | What it tells you | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Blackened or crumbling terminal | Arcing at a loose spade, the most common failure point | New high-temperature spade connector |
| Insulation melted near the terminal | Heat travelled back up the lead | Replace the damaged wire section |
| Wire kinked and broken under intact insulation | Flex fatigue; flex the lead and the break shows | Replace the wire section |
| Corroded terminal post on the element | Contact resistance building heat | Sand bright, apply anti-oxidant compound |
| Coils sagging onto the canister housing | Stretched element shorting intermittently | Reposition on the ceramic insulators |
| Coil wire itself broken | The element is finished | Complete element replacement |
Making the repair#
For a burnt connector with sound wire behind it, cut the old terminal away, strip a quarter inch of insulation, seat the wire in a new high-temperature spade and crimp it firmly. Ordinary electrical connectors melt at dryer operating temperatures, so the 450F rating is not a suggestion.
Where the insulation has gone brittle, splice in high-temperature appliance wire of the same gauge as the original — typically 14 AWG — and join it with ceramic wire nuts or high-temperature crimps. Standard plastic wire nuts have no business inside a dryer cabinet.
Sagging coils are worth an attempt before you spend on a new element: pull the element, lift each drooping coil back onto its ceramic insulator, and reinstall. If a coil snaps while you are handling it, the element is now a replacement job, so decide beforehand whether you are willing to accept that risk.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Closing up and proving the fix#
Push every spade connector on until it seats completely, refit the rear panel, and run a high-heat cycle. Watch the element area through the vent slots: good connections produce no visible sparking at all. Any arcing means a terminal is still loose or the wrong rating went on.
When to hand it over#
Call a technician if the coil wire is broken rather than the leads, if several connections in the element circuit are burnt at once — that pattern points at an overheating condition from a blocked vent rather than a bad connector — or if the canister housing itself is holed or heavily corroded.
