The RTD (resistance temperature detector) is how the control knows the oven's real temperature: its resistance changes with heat, and the board reads that to hold your setpoint. When the probe drifts or its wiring opens, the control either overshoots, never reaches temperature, or gives up and posts an F3 or F4 code. Because those same symptoms can come from a dead element, a lazy igniter, or a stalled convection fan, the smart path is to eliminate the heaters first and land on the sensor by proof, not guesswork.
Tools and parts#
Have a Phillips #2 screwdriver, a 1/4" hex driver, a multimeter, a nut-driver set (1/4" and 5/16"), and an igniter wrench for gas models. Parts depend on what you find: the RTD sensor WB21X5301, or if a heater is at fault, a bake element WB44T10011, an igniter WB13K21, or a convection fan motor WB26X10210 — all vary by model.

Turn off circuit breaker for electric models. For gas: turn off gas supply valve behind stove and verify with soapy water bubble test.
Diagnose, then replace#
- Identify your GE type and symptom. Note whether the range is gas or electric and exactly how it misbehaves — slow to heat, overshooting, or coded F3 or F4 — since that steers which parts you test.
- Test the gas igniters (gas models). A weak igniter that glows but never opens the valve leaves the oven cold; watch it through a bake call and replace WB13K21 if it glows dull without lighting.
- Inspect the bake element (electric models). Look for blistering or a break in the element and meter it for continuity; an open bake element WB44T10011 is a no-heat cause that mimics a sensor fault.
- Test the convection fan (Profile and Cafe models). A convection motor WB26X10210 that has seized leaves hot spots and uneven bakes, so confirm it spins freely before blaming the sensor.
- Test the oven temperature sensor. With the heaters cleared, meter the RTD at room temperature — it should read close to its rated resistance and rise smoothly as it warms. An open, shorted, or wildly off reading confirms the sensor and explains the F3 or F4.
- Check air-fry mode issues (models with air fry). On air-fry-equipped ovens, a sensor reading out of range can also disable that mode, another clue pointing at the RTD.
- Verify the precision cooking probe (if equipped). Do not confuse the meat probe jack with the RTD; a faulty probe throws its own errors, so rule it out before closing up.
To replace the RTD, unplug or kill the breaker, remove the two screws holding the sensor to the rear cavity wall, pull it forward, unplug the harness at the connector behind the wall, and fit WB21X5301 in reverse.

When to call a pro#
If a new sensor does not clear a persistent F3 or F4, the wiring harness between the RTD and the control, or the control board itself, is the next suspect and worth professional testing. Gas-valve or gas-line work should always go to a certified technician.
