Fixing a GE stove starts with the specific design choices GE made. Gas models use individual sealed burners with one igniter each, so a single burner that will not light while the others work points straight at that burner's igniter. Electric ovens use separate bake (bottom) and broil (top) elements, and Profile and Cafe models add a True European Convection element — a ring around the rear fan — for even heat. Knowing which heating system your model uses narrows the diagnosis immediately.

Step-by-Step Instructions#
Step 1 — Identify the stove type and symptom#
Pin down three things: is it gas or electric; which area heats unevenly — stovetop, oven, or both; and does the oven reach temperature but cook unevenly (hot spots), or fail to reach temperature at all? For a gas stovetop, one burner not lighting while others work means a failed igniter for that burner. For an electric oven, baking unevenly (top burns, bottom raw) means bake-element failure. For convection models, uneven results only in convection mode point to the fan motor.
Step 2 — Test gas burner igniters (gas models)#
Turn on the problem burner and watch the igniter — it should glow bright orange/white within 40 seconds and then the gas should light. If it glows weakly (dim orange) for more than 60 seconds without igniting, it has degraded. GE gas ranges use a safety valve that opens only when the igniter draws enough current (3.2-3.6 amps); a weak igniter draws less and the valve never opens. Each sealed burner has its own igniter (part WB13K21 for most models), and they are not universal across positions because the lead-wire lengths differ.
Step 3 — Inspect the bake element (electric models)#
Pull the oven racks and look at the flat loop element on the oven floor. Turn on bake to 350°F and watch: a good element glows uniformly red-orange along its whole length within 2-3 minutes. Dark spots, uneven brightness, or visible blistering or holes mean it has failed — turn off immediately and unplug. The GE bake element (WB44T10011) is held by 2 screws at the rear wall with a wire connector behind.
Step 4 — Test the convection fan (Profile/Cafe models)#
Set the oven to Convection Bake or True European Convection. After the preheat signal, open the door briefly and look at the rear wall — the convection fan should be spinning behind its cover. If it is not, the motor (WB26X10210) has failed. Note that True European Convection uses a ring element around the fan to heat air as it circulates, unlike standard convection that only moves existing heat; if the ring element fails while the fan works, you get circulation without the even-heat benefit.
Step 5 — Test the oven temperature sensor#
If the oven heats unevenly or overshoots or undershoots the setting, the oven temperature sensor (WB21X5301) may be out of calibration. It is an RTD (resistance temperature detector) probe on the rear interior oven wall. With the oven at room temperature, meter it — you should read about 1080-1090 ohms at 70°F, and values well above or below that mean the sensor has failed. It is held by 2 screws reachable from inside the oven, no rear-panel removal needed.
Step 6 — Check Air Fry mode issues (models with Air Fry)#
GE ranges with Air Fry use the same convection fan at higher speed, no extra hardware. If Air Fry does not cook evenly while normal bake is fine, the fan motor may be failing at higher speed (a bearing issue). Also confirm you are not using dark-colored pans in Air Fry — GE recommends the included basket or light-colored pans to prevent uneven browning.
Step 7 — Verify the precision cooking probe (if equipped)#
Profile and Cafe models with the wired precision cooking probe rely on it for meat doneness, and a damaged probe (frayed wire, bent tip) sends wrong readings that confuse the controller. Pull the probe from its wall socket, inspect it, and meter it if you suspect failure. A subtle failure mode here is worth knowing: a probe that reads slightly off does not error out but simply pulls meat off the heat early or late, so if roasts consistently finish over- or under-done while the oven bakes fine on temperature, suspect the probe before the oven sensor. Store the probe in its clip rather than loose in a drawer, where the wire flexes and eventually cracks at the strain point.
Troubleshooting Common Issues#
- Oven takes too long to preheat: on GE models both the bake and broil elements run during preheat, then only bake during cooking, so if preheat is slow, test the broil element too.
- Gas oven igniter clicks continuously but will not light: different from a weak glow — continuous clicking means the spark module works but gas is not reaching the burner, so check the gas supply valve behind the stove.
- Uneven browning on one side only: the oven door gasket may have failed on one side, letting heat escape asymmetrically. Run the dollar-bill test around the door perimeter.
- SmartHQ shows F3 or F4: a temperature-sensor circuit fault. The sensor is usually the culprit — replace it before considering the more expensive control board.
