Step-by-Step Instructions#
Step 1 — Confirm the bake element failed#
Pull the oven racks and turn bake to 350°F, then watch the flat loop element on the oven floor. A healthy element glows uniformly red-orange along its whole length within 2-3 minutes. Dark spots where sections do not glow, uneven brightness, or visible blistering or holes all mean it has failed — turn off immediately and unplug. You can confirm with a meter set to ohms across the element terminals: a good element reads a low resistance, while an open (OL/infinity) reading proves it is burned through.
Step 2 — Cut power and reach the element#
Switch off the range's breaker and verify the oven is dead. The GE bake element (WB44T10011) mounts to the rear oven wall, held by 2 screws, with its two terminals passing through the wall to spade connectors behind. Everything you need is inside the cavity plus the connections just behind the rear wall.
Step 3 — Free and disconnect the old element#
Remove the 2 screws at the rear of the element. Draw the element forward into the cavity so the terminals slide through the wall holes, bringing the wire connectors into view. The element connects through two push-on spade connectors, one per terminal, and the two wires are interchangeable on most bake elements — but photograph the connections anyway as a reassembly reference. Grip each connector body — never the wire — and pull it straight off; if a connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers on the connector body and rock it gently. If a connector is discolored blue or black, or expanded so it no longer grips firmly, crimp on a fresh high-temperature spade connector rated for oven use rather than reuse it, since a loose connection arcs and burns out the new element early.
Step 4 — Install the new element#
Push the spade connectors firmly onto the new element's terminals until they seat, then feed the terminals back through the wall holes, seat the element flat on the oven floor, line up the mounting holes, and drive the 2 screws snug. Confirm no bare wire is exposed and the connectors are not touching the metal wall.
Step 5 — Test the repair#
Push power back on at the breaker, set the oven to BAKE at 350°F, and within a few minutes the new element should glow evenly across its full length with no dark stretch. Let the oven preheat and confirm it reaches temperature; place an oven thermometer on the center rack if you want to verify calibration.
Why GE Bake Elements Fail#
Bake elements are wear items. The resistance wire sealed inside the metal sheath fatigues over thousands of heat-and-cool cycles and eventually breaks at its weakest point, which is why failure usually shows as a dark section that no longer glows. A few things speed that along: oven cleaner or spills dripping onto the element corrode the sheath, a self-clean cycle stresses the element hard at high heat, and a restricted or poorly ventilated oven runs the element hotter than intended. When an element burns through you may see a brief bright arc flash as it lets go, and in some cases that ground fault trips the kitchen breaker — so if the breaker trips when you select bake but not broil, the bake element has shorted.

Other GE Oven Heating Faults to Rule Out#
If baking is still off after the element swap, a few other GE parts can be the cause. On gas models, a single burner that will not light while others do is a weak igniter (WB13K21) not drawing enough current (3.2-3.6 amps) to open the safety valve. On Profile and Cafe convection models, uneven results only in convection mode point to the convection fan motor (WB26X10210); check that the fan spins behind its rear cover after preheat. And an oven that overshoots or undershoots the setpoint often has a drifted oven temperature sensor (WB21X5301) — an RTD probe on the rear wall that should read about 1080-1090 ohms at 70°F.
