How to Replace a GE Coil Burner Receptacle Block

Receptacle or element?#

The receptacle block holds two spring contacts that grip the coil element's prongs and pass 240-volt power to it. When those contacts lose tension or burn, the element cannot draw full power even though it is fine. The fastest test is a swap: lift the dead element out and plug it into a burner you know works. If it heats there, the element is good and the original receptacle is the fault; if it stays cold, the element is the problem instead.

Spot the damage#

Lift the suspect element and look into the socket. Blackened or pitted contacts, melted housing, or a socket that no longer grips the prongs firmly all point to arcing. Arcing feeds on itself — a loose contact heats, oxidizes, loses more tension, and eventually scorches the wire leads — so a socket that sparks should be replaced before it damages the wiring behind it.

Replace the socket#

1. Switch off the range breaker; the receptacle wiring is live at 240 volts.
2. Lift the cooktop or pull the trim ring so the receptacle and its two lead wires are exposed.
3. Photograph the leads, then release the receptacle from its bracket and disconnect the wires (screw terminals or crimped ends).
4. Fit the new receptacle, reconnecting each lead to the matching terminal and snugging it fully.
5. Reseat the bracket, drop the cooktop back down, and plug the element back in.

Test under load#

Restore power and turn the repaired burner to a medium setting. The coil should glow evenly within a couple of minutes with no sparking or buzzing at the socket. Bring it up to high, then let it cool and confirm the receptacle is warm but never hot enough to have scorched again. If a fresh receptacle still will not carry full current, the wiring back to the switch is the next suspect.
