How to Replace a Bosch Stove Oven Selector Switch

Bosch uses sealed rotary switches rated for 250V/16A, in 8- and 10-position variants (the "Schalter 10" is the ten-position dial on full-feature ovens). They wear through thousands of rotations — corroded contacts and tired detent springs are the usual failures — and the internal contacts are not serviceable, so a worn switch is replaced whole.

Before You Start#

• Tools: Torx T20 and T15 drivers, a small flat blade, needle-nose pliers, a multimeter, and your phone for terminal photos.
• Part: a BSH oven selector switch matched to your E/Nr — common numbers are 00617049 (10-position, 500/800 series), 00622456 (8-position, 300 series) and 00173809 (older models). The position count must match exactly.
• Time and level: 45-60 minutes, intermediate.
• Safety: disconnect at the breaker. Line-voltage wiring (120V/240V) sits right behind the panel, so verify it is dead with a non-contact tester before touching a wire.

Swapping the Selector Switch#

1. Pull the press-fit knobs straight off, catching any trim ring behind a stainless knob, and set them aside in order.
2. Remove the two to four Torx T20 screws along the top edge or behind the end caps and lower or slide the faceplate away.
3. Photograph the back of the switch from several angles — the terminals are numbered on the body and wire colours can vary by production year.
4. Pull each 6.3mm spade connector straight off with the pliers, noting any piggyback pairs; a 10-position switch typically has eight to twelve connections.
5. Release the threaded collar or the spring clips and push the switch out the back. Note the shaft-flat orientation, which sets knob alignment.
6. Fit the new switch with the flat matched, land each wire on its numbered terminal until it clicks, and double-check against your photos — a mis-landed live feed can energise elements in the Off position.
7. Before reassembly, install the knob, restore power, and rotate through every position: Off gives no heat, each mode lights the correct elements, and the self-clean position drives the door lock.

Troubleshooting#

• Some modes dead, dial still clicks: individual contacts are burnt; the sealed switch must be replaced, not repaired.
• Oven stays on in Off: the live feed is on the wrong terminal — power off and recheck against your photos.
• A code appears after the swap: a Bosch board may need a reset — hold the power button for 10 seconds or cycle the breaker for 60 seconds.
• Self-clean will not lock: the lock-motor wire is not on the correct terminal, which is marked with a lock symbol on the switch body.
