How to Replace a Bosch Cooktop Mechanical Switch

Bosch mechanical cooktops use EGO-brand energy regulators (the German maker that supplies most European ranges). Inside each regulator, a bimetallic strip warmed by a small pilot heater flexes to open and close the element circuit on a cycle — a higher knob setting feeds the pilot more current, so the contacts stay closed longer and the element runs hotter. Knowing that mechanism is how you tell a failed regulator from a failed element.

Before You Start#

• Tools: Torx T20 and T15 drivers, a small flat screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a multimeter, and your phone for wiring photos.
• Part: an EGO infinite energy regulator matched to your zone wattage. Common BSH/EGO numbers are 00173827 (single-circuit 2000W), 00173828 (dual-circuit 1200/2200W), and 00605923 (models with an indicator-light tap). Match by the E/Nr on your rating plate.
• Time and level: 45-60 minutes, intermediate.
• Safety: switch off the 240V circuit at the breaker. Each regulator carries full line voltage to its element, and neighbouring zones can stay live through shared wiring — confirm every terminal is dead before you touch it.

Replacing the Regulator#

1. Pull the knobs straight off, then remove the two to four Torx T20 screws holding the control facia (they hide under the top lip or behind end caps) and swing it clear to expose the row of regulators.
2. Identify the faulty zone's switch — each is a roughly 50mm cylindrical body with a flat shaft and four to six spade terminals stamped 1, 2, 3, 4 and P for the pilot lamp.
3. Photograph every terminal from two angles before touching a wire; the diagram is usually on the rear panel or under the glass.
4. Pull each spade connector straight off with the pliers, working only on the failed switch so its neighbours stay wired.
5. Release the threaded collar (turn counter-clockwise from the front) or squeeze the spring clips, and slide the old regulator out. Compare shaft length, terminal layout and mount against the replacement.
6. Fit the new regulator with the shaft flat in the same orientation, since it sets the Off position, then reconnect each wire to its matching terminal until it clicks and land the indicator wire on P if your cooktop has a zone light.
7. Restore power and test the zone at Off, Low, Medium (roughly 50% on-off cycling you can see through the glass) and High, then confirm the neighbouring zones still behave.

Troubleshooting#

• Zone stuck on full heat: the bimetal contacts have welded shut and the element cannot be turned off — kill power and replace the regulator immediately.
• Zone dead at every setting: confirm 240V at the live terminal; if voltage is present the regulator's contacts have failed open, or the element itself is broken.
• Faint clicking on low: normal — the bimetal cycles the element every 10-30 seconds at low settings, and the click is just the contacts opening and closing.

Before the Holiday Season#

Energy regulators are rated for roughly 50,000-100,000 cycles, so at four cycles a session, five sessions a week, they typically last 5-10 years — replacing a worn one now keeps every burner reliable for the cooking months ahead.
