The two failure points#
Power reaches the range through two joints: the wall receptacle (a NEMA 14-50 four-wire outlet, or an older NEMA 10-50 three-wire one) and the range's own terminal block behind the rear panel, where the cord lands on screw terminals. Either can arc. Signs are a warm or discolored outlet face, melted plastic, or blackened, blue-tinged copper at the terminals.
Kill and verify power#
Switch off the dedicated 50-amp breaker, then confirm it with a meter reading 0V across every terminal pair and a non-contact tester at the outlet face. Turning the range off is not enough — the outlet stays live. This is the step that makes 240V work safe, so never skip the verification.

Replace the wall receptacle#
- Pull the range forward and unplug the cord by the body, lifting the rear over any anti-tip bracket.
- Remove the cover plate and the two screws holding the outlet in its box, and draw it out.
- Move each wire to the new 50-amp 14-50R outlet: the two hot legs to the brass terminals, neutral to silver, ground to green.
- Torque each terminal to spec — around 30-35 inch-pounds — because loose screws, not bad outlets, start most range fires.
- Reseat the outlet, refit the cover, and set the range aside for the terminal-block check.
Check the range terminal block and wiring type#
Remove the rear lower panel (four to six Torx T20 screws) and inspect the block for the same burn signs; BSH stocks a replacement if the block itself is cracked or scorched. Match the wiring type while you are in there: a four-wire hookup keeps neutral and ground separate on their own terminals, while a grandfathered three-wire hookup needs the Bosch ground strap bridging neutral to the frame. The block is labeled L1 and L2 for the hot legs and N for neutral. Load-test afterward by running the oven at 400°F with a burner on and feeling the outlet — warm is fine, hot is not.
