How to Repair an LG Dryer That Will Not Start

An LG dryer will not run until three conditions land at once: the door switch reports the door shut, the thermal fuse reports no overheat, and the control board fires the motor relay. Walk the chain in that order and you avoid buying parts you do not need.

Step 1 — Rule out the power supply#

An LG electric dryer needs a full 240V feed, delivered by a double breaker whose two halves must both be on. Reset the breaker and meter the outlet, or plug in something you know works. Lose one leg of the 240V circuit and you get the classic false alarm — the drum light glows but the motor never turns.

Step 2 — Test the door switch#

LG mounts the door switch at the top of the door opening, where a strike on the door presses it shut. If it fails, the board never sees a closed door and holds the motor off. Unplug, reach the switch through the front panel or the lint-filter opening on some models, and meter it: pressed (door-closed) should read continuity, released should read OL. A wrong reading in either state means replace it.

Step 3 — Test the thermal fuse#

The thermal fuse is a one-shot device clipped to the blower housing or exhaust duct, and a dryer that overheated from a blocked vent pops it for good, cutting the motor circuit. Meter it for continuity — a good fuse shows 0 ohms, and OL means it is blown. Replace a blown fuse, but clear the vent that blew it first or the new one follows within a load or two.

Step 4 — Test the start switch#

The start button hands the board its go signal. A telltale LG symptom is a panel that lights up and accepts a cycle selection, yet does nothing when you press start. Meter across the switch and press — you want continuity on the push.

Step 5 — Test the drive motor#

With power, door switch, fuse, and start switch all good, the motor moves to the top of the list. Its built-in thermal overload trips when it overheats and resets as it cools, so a dryer that runs after a half-hour rest then quits again is telling you the motor is overheating from worn bearings, a locked blower, or a dragging belt. Disconnect the motor and read across the run-winding terminals — roughly 2-6 ohms is normal, while OL means a burned winding.

Step 6 — Check the control board#

If every mechanical part checks out and the drum stays dead, suspect the main board's motor relay. Pull the board and look it over for scorched components or a swollen capacitor; visible damage confirms it, and the fix is a new board.

Step 7 — Reassemble and confirm#

Refit the panels, restore power, and press start. The motor should engage within 1-2 seconds, and once the drum turns and the dryer heats normally the repair is done.

Common no-start patterns#

• Starts, then stops after a few seconds: the motor's thermal overload is tripping — look for a seized blower wheel, a lint pack behind the drum, or worn bearings.
• Hums but the drum won't move: the motor runs but the belt is broken.
• Panel lights, nothing on start: a failed start switch or a failed board relay.
• Only runs while you hold the door hard: the door strike is worn or misaligned — adjust or replace it.

Hand it off if the motor needs replacing (belt routing and drum support make it fiddly), if board diagnosis goes past a visual check into scope testing, or if the outlet itself is delivering the wrong voltage.
