KitchenAid uses the same screen design as Whirlpool's premium dryers — straight up out of a slot in the top panel on most models, or from inside the door opening on some front-panel designs.
Step 1 — rule the screen in or out#
Pull it up and look at the frame. A crack there lets lint bypass the screen entirely and enter the blower system, and no amount of cleaning fixes that. Check the mesh for holes and tears the same way. Damage means replacement, not repair.
If the screen is structurally sound, wash it in hot soapy water and scrub both sides with a soft brush, then hold it under running water. Water pooling on the surface instead of passing through means fabric softener residue has sealed the mesh — soak it in hot water with dish soap for 20 minutes and scrub again. Then set it aside, because everything else is inside the machine.

Step 2 — clear the channel#
With the screen out, work the vacuum crevice attachment down inside the housing slot. Lint compresses at the bottom of that channel over years and restricts airflow while the screen above it looks perfectly clean. This is the single most overlooked part of the job.
Scrub the slot walls with the brush too. Residue accumulates on them and creates the friction that makes a screen hard to push in or pull out — which people usually blame on the screen.
Then shine the flashlight straight down the channel. You should see through to the blower duct below. If you cannot, there is a blockage below the channel opening, and clearing it means taking the front panel or duct cover off rather than reaching further with a vacuum.
Step 3 — fix the slot itself#
If the screen catches or binds, run a finger along the slot edges feeling for burrs or bent metal. Smooth what you find with fine sandpaper — 220 grit — or a small file.
The opposite problem has the opposite fix. If the slot has widened and the screen sits loose in it, bend the slot edges very slightly inward with pliers until the fit is snug again. A screen that rattles in its slot is not sealing against anything.

Step 4 — the seal nobody checks#
The lint housing connects to the blower duct through a seal or gasket. When that seal is missing or has deteriorated, hot air bypasses the lint screen completely: clothes take longer to dry, and lint travels straight into the blower system regardless of how clean your screen is.
Reaching it means removing the top panel or the front panel, depending on your model. Replace it with a matching gasket, or seal it with high-temperature tape.
Step 5 — reassemble and prove it#
Slide the clean or new screen back in. It should go in smoothly and seat fully, with the handle flush to the top surface — if it does not, go back to step 3. Run a high-heat timed cycle for 5 minutes and feel the exhaust at the exterior vent. Strong airflow there confirms the whole path is clear.

What to hand over#
Three situations are worth a technician. Lint that has already entered the blower housing and packed around the blower wheel needs the machine opened up properly. A blockage in the interior duct between housing and blower that a vacuum cannot reach is the same story.
