How to Fix a Whirlpool Dryer
Work from the symptom, not from a parts list. No heat is the thermal fuse or element, no tumble is the belt or motor, noise is rollers or the drum bearing, and cycles that never end are the moisture sensor or a blocked vent. Most of these are a 30 to 90 minute job at intermediate level with a Phillips #2, a 5/16-inch…
Find your tech sheet first. Whirlpool folds one into every dryer — inside the console behind the control panel, or taped inside the rear panel — and it carries your model's wiring diagram, component locations, belt routing and diagnostic procedures. Unplug the machine, close the gas valve at the wall on a gas model, and let it cool 30 minutes if it has just run.
Start with the code#
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F1 E1 | Main control board EEPROM communication failure |
| F2 E1 | Keypad stuck button |
| F3 E1 | Exhaust thermistor open or short |
| F4 E1 | Airflow restriction detected |
| AF | Airflow restriction warning — clean the vent immediately |

Opening it up#
The top comes off with a putty knife at the front-corner spring clips, about 2 inches in from each edge, or by removing two rear screws and sliding it back on older machines. The front panel needs its two top screws out, the door switch harness unplugged, and its two lower screws or clips released before it lifts off the lower hooks.
For anything thermal you go to the back instead: six to eight screws around the rear panel perimeter and it comes straight off, exposing the element housing, exhaust duct and the safety components.
Where things live: the element in a metal housing can on the back wall, the thermal fuse on the exhaust housing at the blower outlet, the thermal cutoff and high-limit thermostat on the element housing, the cycling thermostat on the exhaust housing. Drum rollers, idler pulley and motor are front-access below the drum once it is out.
The belt, and why reassembly bites#
The drum sits on the rear bearing and is wrapped by a narrow multi-rib belt. To get it out, reach under the drum, push the idler pulley toward the motor to release tension, slip the belt off the motor shaft, and lift the drum up and forward.
Routing on the way back: ribbed side against the drum surface, down from the drum to the idler, a full 180-degree wrap around the idler wheel, then on around the motor shaft. The idler is spring-loaded, so you are pushing it toward the motor with one hand while threading the belt with the other. This is genuinely the hardest part of the job, and its spring tension is what holds the belt tight afterwards.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Symptom notes worth knowing#
- Thermal fuse blown — it always sits on the exhaust path, and a restricted vent is nearly always why it went. Clear the vent before fitting the new one or you will blow that one too
- Long cycles — the two AccuDry sensor bars inside the drum, below the door opening, get coated with dryer sheet residue and end cycles early. Sand them with fine sandpaper and wipe with alcohol every two to three months
- Sudden stop that will not restart — the belt broke, the idler dropped onto its safety switch and cut motor power
- 4-way venting — the exhaust can leave in any of four directions and only one should be uncapped. After rear panel work, check you left the right one open
- EcoBoost heat pump models — no external vent and a completely different heating system, so none of the standard heating repairs apply
Put it back and test it#
Panels go on in reverse order. Run a short timed-dry cycle with a damp towel: smooth rotation, heat within a minute or two, no new noises, and AccuDry ending the cycle when the towel is dry.
If something is still off, the cause is usually reassembly rather than the part. A squeal means the belt went on smooth-side-down — flip it. A drum that will not turn means the belt came off the motor shaft as you refitted the front panel. Thumping after new rollers is a roller not fully seated, or just a cycle or two of breaking in. Overheating means the cycling thermostat or thermistor never got reconnected.
For a gas smell near the burner, a seized motor shaft needing puller tools, or a heat pump refrigerant circuit that requires EPA certification, book a repair.
