Frigidaire Washer EF1: Drain Flow Restriction

EF1 vs. E21

E21 fires when the drain pump cannot empty the tub within its timeout (no drainage at all). EF1 fires when the board detects drainage is occurring but at an insufficient flow rate. Water is leaving, but too slowly.

Common Causes

Partially blocked drain hose. Grease, lint, or small items create a partial obstruction. Water flows but slowly.

Drain hose kinked. A kink narrows the hose without fully blocking it. Flow is reduced but not stopped.

Pump impeller wear. A worn impeller moves water less efficiently. The pump runs but output volume drops below the board's expected flow rate.

Clogged drain pump filter (partial). The filter catches debris. A partially clogged filter restricts flow without stopping it entirely.

Diagnosis

1. Clean the drain pump filter. Open the lower front access door, drain residual water, and remove the filter. Clear trapped debris.
2. Disconnect the drain hose. Blow through it. If airflow is restricted, flush with hot water.
3. Check for hose kinks. The hose should have smooth, even curves with no sharp bends.
4. If filter and hose are clear, the pump impeller may be worn. This requires pump access and inspection.

Can EF1 progress to E21? Yes. A partial blockage that causes EF1 today can become a complete blockage causing E21 as more debris accumulates.

EF1 only on large loads. Normal on small. Large loads produce more lint and debris that temporarily clog the filter during drainage. Clean the filter more frequently.

Can fabric softener cause EF1? Liquid fabric softener residue can coat the inside of the drain hose, creating a sticky surface that catches lint and narrows the passage over time.
