Frigidaire Washer E57: Motor Overcurrent Detected
What E57 Means
The control board monitors motor current draw. E57 fires when current exceeds the safe threshold, indicating the motor is working harder than it should. The board shuts down to protect the motor and wiring from overheating.

Common Causes
Overloaded drum. Too much laundry creates excessive drag on the motor. This is the most common and easiest-to-fix cause. Remove items until the load does not exceed the manufacturer's capacity (typically two-thirds full).
Seized drum bearings. Over years, the main drum bearings wear and eventually seize. The motor draws excessive current trying to turn the drum against bearing friction. Spin the drum by hand with the washer off: it should turn freely with minimal resistance. Grinding, squealing, or stiffness indicates bearing failure.
Motor winding partial short. Adjacent winding turns shorting together reduce the motor's effective impedance, causing higher current draw at normal load.
Foreign object between drum and tub. An underwire, coin, or other item lodged between the inner drum and outer tub creates friction the motor must overcome.
Diagnosis
- Try running an empty cycle. If E57 clears with no load, the issue is overloading.
- If E57 appears with an empty drum, spin the drum by hand. Resistance or noise indicates bearing or foreign object issues.
- If the drum spins freely, measure motor winding resistance: 2-10 ohms expected. Significantly lower suggests a partial short.

FAQ
Can overloading damage the washer? Repeated overloading accelerates bearing wear, stresses the motor, and can damage the door boot seal from excessive drum expansion.
E57 during spin only. High-speed spin draws the most current. Marginal bearing wear or motor degradation may only manifest during spin.
Is bearing replacement worth it? Bearing replacement on front-load washers is labor-intensive (requires drum removal). If the washer is over 10 years old, compare the $200-$350 repair cost against replacement.
