Frigidaire Washer E44: Door Lock Stuck Closed
Your Clothes Are Trapped
Unlike E41 (lock won't engage), E44 means the lock is stuck in the locked position. The latch mechanism engaged but cannot release. The door remains locked and your clothes are inside.

How to Unlock
- Unplug the washer. Wait 5-10 minutes. The bi-metal element cools and may release the latch naturally.
- If still locked after cooling: look for a manual release. On some Frigidaire models, a thin flat tool (like a credit card or putty knife) can be slid between the door and cabinet to push the latch manually. Check your owner's manual for the release method specific to your model.
- If manual release fails: remove the top panel (screws at rear). You can reach the lock assembly from above and manually disengage the latch mechanism.
Why the Lock Jams
Bi-metal element failed in the engaged position. The element expanded to lock but its internal conductor failed while engaged. It cannot contract to release.
Lock mechanism corroded. Water splash from the boot seal corrodes the metal lock components. The latch physically jams from corrosion.
Foreign object in the lock housing. A small item wedged between the latch and housing prevents retraction.

FAQ
Is E44 dangerous? Not dangerous, but frustrating. The washer is not operating, so no water, electrical, or mechanical risk.
E44 appeared during a cycle. Is there water inside? Possibly. If E44 appeared before the drain phase, water may be in the tub. Use the drain filter access door at the lower front to drain water before attempting to force the door.
Can I prevent E44? Keep the lock area dry. Wipe splash from the boot seal near the lock. Avoid slamming the door (shock stresses the latch mechanism).
