Frigidaire Washer E41: Door Lock Cannot Engage
What E41 Means
E41 fires when the control board commands the door lock to engage but does not receive confirmation within the timeout (typically 20-30 seconds). The washer cannot start any cycle without confirmed door lock engagement.

Door Lock Mechanism
The door lock on Frigidaire front-load washers uses a bi-metal element that heats when energized, bending a latch into the locked position. A switch on the lock assembly sends a signal to the board confirming the locked state. The process takes 5-10 seconds normally.
Common Causes
Failed bi-metal element. After thousands of heat-cool cycles, the bi-metal strip weakens. It no longer bends far enough to engage the latch.
Broken lock switch. The switch confirms position but has failed. The lock physically engages but the board receives no confirmation.
Door striker misalignment. The metal hook on the door must align precisely with the lock assembly on the cabinet. Sagging hinges shift the striker position.
Wiring fault. The lock assembly wiring passes through the door frame area where repeated flexing can break conductors.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Testing
- Unplug. Remove the door boot front retaining spring (pry at the bottom with a flathead screwdriver). Peel the boot inward to expose the lock assembly.
- Disconnect the lock connector. Measure resistance across the bi-metal leads: expect 300-1000 ohms. Infinite means the element has failed.
- Check the lock switch: should show continuity changes when the latch is manually pushed into locked position.

FAQ
Can I close the door harder to make E41 go away? No. Forcing the door does not help because E41 is an electrical or mechanical failure, not a latching force issue.
E41 appears intermittently. Intermittent E41 usually indicates corroded lock assembly terminals or a weakening bi-metal element that engages slowly.
Will E41 lock me out of my clothes? No. E41 means the lock failed to engage. The door remains unlocked. Your clothes are accessible.
