Frigidaire Refrigerator SY CF: Condenser Fan Failure
Where the Condenser Fan Is
The condenser fan sits underneath or behind the refrigerator near the compressor and condenser coils. Its job: pull air across the condenser coils to remove heat from the refrigerant after compression. Without this fan, the condenser cannot dissipate heat efficiently. Refrigerant stays warm, compressor pressure rises, and cooling efficiency drops dramatically.

SY CF vs. 5Y EF
5Y EF is the evaporator fan (inside the freezer, circulates cold air). SY CF is the condenser fan (outside the cabinet, removes heat). Both are critical but serve different functions. SY CF primarily affects efficiency and compressor health, while 5Y EF directly affects cooling.
Symptoms Before SY CF
The refrigerator runs longer cycles, the compressor feels hotter than normal, the cabinet sides feel warm to the touch, and the area under the refrigerator radiates more heat than usual. These symptoms precede SY CF as the condenser fan gradually fails.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Diagnosis
- Unplug the refrigerator. Remove the rear lower access panel.
- Locate the condenser fan near the compressor. Spin the blade by hand. It should turn freely.
- If the blade is jammed, check for debris (dust bunnies, fallen items) blocking the blade. Clear and test again.
- If the blade turns freely, measure motor resistance: expect 5-25 ohms. Infinite means the motor winding is open.
- If the motor tests good, check the wiring connector at the main board.
Fan Motor Replacement
Part: model-specific, $25-$50.
The condenser fan motor mounts with two to four screws to a bracket near the compressor. Disconnect the wire connector. Remove the mounting screws. Transfer the fan blade to the new motor (usually a push-fit onto the shaft). Mount the new motor. Reconnect.

Consequence of Running Without the Condenser Fan
The compressor overheats and trips its overload protector (OP code may appear). Refrigerant does not condense efficiently, so cooling capacity drops. If allowed to continue, compressor life shortens significantly. Repair SY CF promptly to prevent compressor damage.

FAQ
Can the refrigerator still cool with SY CF? Partially. The compressor still runs, but without the condenser fan, heat dissipation is poor. The unit runs less efficiently and may not maintain setpoint, especially in warm kitchens.
SY CF appeared after cleaning under the refrigerator. A wire connector may have been bumped loose during cleaning. Check the fan motor connector.
Is SY CF related to dirty coils? Dirty coils and a failed condenser fan compound each other but are separate problems. Clean the coils regardless of whether SY CF appears.
Frigidaire refrigerator condenser fan not running? SY CF repair is quick. Book a diagnostic.
