Frigidaire Refrigerator HI: Fresh Food Section Too Warm
HI vs. H1
H1 is the freezer high-temperature alarm. HI is the fresh food compartment high-temperature alarm. The fresh food section is cooled by air pushed from the freezer through a damper door. HI triggers when the fresh food section exceeds approximately 55F.

Why the Fresh Food Section Gets Warm
Damper door stuck closed. The damper is a motorized flap between the freezer and fresh food sections. When the fresh food thermostat calls for cooling, the damper opens to let cold air flow in. If the damper motor fails or ice jams the flap closed, no cold air reaches the fresh food section even though the freezer remains cold.
Evaporator fan failure. The fan pushes cold air through the damper. Without the fan, cold air stays near the coils. This usually triggers 5Y EF simultaneously.
Defrost failure. Ice buildup blocks the airflow channel between freezer and fresh food sections. The freezer stays marginally cold (ice is near the coils, providing some cooling), but the fresh food section gets no air.
Door left ajar. A door that did not close fully or a weak door seal allows warm room air to continuously enter. Check the door alarm (if equipped) history.
Heavy loading. Large amounts of warm food placed in the fresh food section at once can temporarily overwhelm the cooling capacity.
Diagnosis
- Check the freezer temperature. If the freezer is at or near 0F but the fresh food is warm, the damper system is the most likely cause.
- If the freezer is also warm, the problem is upstream (compressor, fan, defrost) and HI is a secondary symptom. Address H1/5Y EF/dF first.
- Listen at the damper area (usually top rear of fresh food section). When the thermostat calls for cooling, you should hear the damper motor click and the damper flap open. Silence means the motor may have failed.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Damper Motor Replacement
Part: model-specific, $30-$60.
The damper assembly mounts at the top of the fresh food section behind a plastic cover. Remove the cover screws, disconnect the motor connector, remove the damper housing mounting screws, and install the new assembly.

Gallery EvenTemp Difference
Gallery models with EvenTemp twin evaporators do not use a damper between compartments because each section has its own evaporator. HI on an EvenTemp model means the fresh food evaporator or its fan has failed independently, not a damper issue.

FAQ
Should I move food to the freezer with HI showing? If the fresh food section exceeds 40F and repair will take more than a few hours, yes. Perishables should stay below 40F.
HI appears only in summer. Normal? Marginal cooling capacity (dirty coils, weak compressor) may be adequate in winter but insufficient in summer. Clean condenser coils and check the door gasket seal.
Is HI different from H1? Yes. H1 is the freezer alarm. HI is the fresh food alarm. Different compartments, potentially different causes.
