The Causes, Most Common First#
Clogged evaporator drain tube#
The top cause. The defrost cycle melts frost off the evaporator, and that water is supposed to run down a drain tube to a pan beneath the fridge where compressor heat evaporates it. When the tube clogs with debris or ice, the water has nowhere to go, so it backs up and pools on the freezer floor or leaks into the compartment below. Flush the drain with warm water using a turkey baster or syringe, and clear an ice plug with a hair dryer on low. If it keeps refreezing, the drain needs a heater clip to stop the ice from reforming at the tube mouth.
Door gasket not sealing#
The door gasket is the watertight seal between the door and the tub, and over years the rubber hardens, cracks, or takes a permanent flat spot from being compressed. Warm room air then leaks past it and condenses inside, running down as water that looks like a leak. Check the gasket channel for food debris or mineral buildup keeping it from seating flush, clean it with a damp cloth and white vinegar, and replace the gasket if it's cracked or permanently deformed — a genuine part matters here for the fit.
Defrost water overflow from a blocked pan#
Closely related to the drain tube, the pan beneath the fridge can itself be the problem. If the tube clogs or the pan cracks, defrost water overflows onto the floor rather than evaporating away. Flush the drain with hot water from a baster, and inspect the pan for cracks or signs that the evaporation system has failed. A drain that freezes again and again is the case for a heater clip rather than repeated manual thawing.
Cracked or clogged water filter housing#
The water filter, due for replacement every six months, restricts flow when it clogs — and a cracked filter housing leaks directly. A badly clogged filter can drop pressure below the inlet valve's minimum, around 20 PSI, so water barely flows, while a cracked housing weeps around the cartridge. Check the filter indicator, and if ice production and flow return after fitting the bypass plug, the filter was the culprit; use a genuine cartridge, since an ill-fitting aftermarket one is itself a common leak source.
Ice-maker line drip#
The ice maker's water path — inlet valve, fill tube, and mold — can drip from a frozen fill tube that overflows, or a failing inlet-valve solenoid. Verify the supply pressure is at least around 20 PSI and the fill tube isn't iced over; if you meter the inlet-valve coil, a healthy one reads roughly 500 to 1500 ohms. A fill tube that freezes and overflows leaves water tracking down from the ice maker, which reads as an unexplained interior leak until you trace it back to the source. Warming the freezer even slightly or clearing a partial blockage in the fill tube usually stops the overflow, but if the tube keeps freezing, the small line heater or the harvest thermostat may be the deeper cause and worth checking before you assume the valve is at fault.
When to Bring In a Pro#
A good deal of this is homeowner-friendly — flushing a drain tube, cleaning or replacing a gasket, swapping a filter — and worth doing first because the drain tube alone explains most leaks.
