E20 vs. E21 on Electrolux

E20 fires when the board detects insufficient drain flow rate. E21 fires when the total drain time exceeds the programmed maximum regardless of flow rate. E21 is more severe: it means drainage was either very slow or completely absent for the entire timeout period.

On Frigidaire washers, only E21 exists for drain failures. Electrolux's dual-code approach (E20 for flow rate, E21 for timeout) provides more diagnostic precision.

Diagnosis

Same as E20 but with emphasis on complete blockages rather than partial restrictions. Clean the filter, check the drain hose, verify pump operation. E21 more frequently indicates a fully blocked filter or hose versus E20's partial restriction.

The Electrolux Filter Design

Electrolux front-load washers use a larger-diameter pump filter than Frigidaire equivalents, with a coarser mesh that allows more debris to pass to the pump. This design reduces filter cleaning frequency but means items that pass the filter can jam the pump impeller. When E21 appears after recent filter cleaning, the impeller itself may be obstructed by an item that passed through the filter.
