Electrolux Refrigerator SH: Sensor High Reading
What SH Means
SH (Sensor High) indicates a temperature sensor is reading below its expected resistance range, which the board interprets as an abnormally high temperature. This is the refrigerator equivalent of the oven's F31 code: the sensor's electrical characteristics have shifted, causing the board to receive inaccurate readings.

Which Sensor?
Electrolux refrigerators have multiple temperature sensors: freezer air, fresh food air, evaporator, and sometimes ambient. The SH code on most Electrolux models identifies which sensor through a sub-code visible in diagnostic mode.
Access diagnostic mode: press and hold the Freezer and Fridge buttons simultaneously for five seconds. The display shows stored codes with sensor identification.
Common Causes
Sensor resistance drifted low. The NTC thermistor's resistance has decreased over time, causing the board to read a higher temperature than actual. Test at room temperature: typical Electrolux refrigerator sensors read 5,000-8,000 ohms at 72F (varies by position). Below 3,000 ohms at room temperature indicates drift.
Sensor wiring short. Insulation damage allows the sensor wires to partially short, reducing apparent resistance.
Moisture contamination. Condensation on sensor connector pins creates conductive paths that lower resistance readings.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Diagnosis
- Identify which sensor via diagnostic sub-code.
- Unplug. Access the sensor (freezer: behind rear panel; fresh food: behind ceiling panel or side wall).
- Disconnect sensor connector. Measure resistance at room temperature.
- If resistance is below expected range, replace the sensor ($15-$30).
- If resistance is normal, check wiring and connector for moisture.

Consequence of SH
With SH active, the board overestimates compartment temperature. It runs the compressor harder than necessary, increasing energy consumption and potentially over-cooling the affected compartment. Food may freeze in the fresh food section.
FAQ
Can SH cause food to freeze in the fridge? Yes. If the fresh food sensor reads artificially high, the board overcools the compartment.
How many sensors does an Electrolux refrigerator have? Typically four: freezer air, fresh food air, evaporator, and sometimes ambient. Each has its own sensor position and expected resistance range.
Is SH urgent? Not immediately dangerous, but the compressor running harder than needed shortens its life. Repair within a week.
