Bosch vs Thermador Dishwasher: The Same Machine
A Thermador dishwasher is essentially a Bosch 800 series wearing a premium finish, with interior lighting and the Star Speed cycle added. Same platform, same wash system, same error codes, same 10-14 year expectation. Buy the Thermador if you are getting it inside a kitchen package; otherwise buy the Bosch 800 and…
What is genuinely different#
| Bosch 800 | Thermador | |
|---|---|---|
| Drying | CrystalDry Zeolite | StarDry — the same Zeolite technology |
| Noise | 42-44 dB, quietest in class | Same platform, same wash system |
| Speed | No speed cycle on base models | Star Speed 20-minute wash cycle |
| Extras | PrecisionWash sensor spray | Sapphire Glow interior light, premium handle and finish options |
| Rack layout | Less flexible adjustment | More flexible adjustment |
| Service | Largest US market share, widest service network | Smaller service network, parts cost 30-50% more |
Reliability is identical because the hardware is identical — you are paying for aesthetics and that 20-minute cycle, not for a better machine.
The faults are shared, and so is the triage#
E24 belongs to both. It fires when the machine cannot drain inside the expected window, and the causes are a kinked drain hose, a blocked garbage disposal knockout plug, a failed drain pump impeller, or debris sitting in the pump sump filter. Cleaning the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub resolves roughly 60% of these with no parts at all. On a Thermador there is a wrinkle worth knowing: its premium cycles run hotter and spray harder, so they loosen more debris into the drain path — start at the triple-filter at the tub bottom.
E09 is the heating fault on both, since BSH integrates a flow-through heater into the circulation pump assembly; when it goes, water never reaches sanitising temperature and the repair frequently takes the pump with it. The rest of the E-series is shared too: E15 for a leak, E22 for filter blockage, E24 for drain failure. Diagnostically, a Thermador reads exactly like a Bosch.
Door latches wear at the strike plate after thousands of cycles on either machine, but Thermador's panel-ready models carry custom cabinet panels whose weight stresses the latch and hinges — adjusting the hinge springs and strike plate compensates. Circulation pumps are the same BSH component, though Star Speed asks more output from it, which can wear a Thermador pump faster than the equivalent Bosch. And when Star Speed itself turns inconsistent, look at water temperature, an overloaded rack, or a degraded heating element that cannot get hot enough inside a 20-minute window.

The buying call#
Thermador runs a free dishwasher promotion when you buy three or more qualifying Thermador appliances, and that is far and away the best way to own one — it turns a Bosch 800 equivalent into a no-cost addition to the suite. Outside the promotion, the Bosch 800 gives you the same cleaning, the same drying and the same expected life for meaningfully less, with a larger service network and cheaper parts behind it.
If a repair quote ever passes 50% of a comparable new machine, put the money toward replacement instead, especially once the unit is past about 70% of its expected life.
We service both badges on the BSH platform. Book a repair.
