Bosch Dryer Tripping Circuit Breaker — Motor, Heater & Board Short Diagnosis
A Bosch compact dryer that trips the circuit breaker has a ground fault or short circuit. Bosch dryers connect to a dedicated 240V/30A circuit (US) or may use a standard 120V/20A on some configurations. The breaker protects against fire from overcurrent.
Most Common Causes
1. Heating Element Ground Fault (30% — WGA condenser only)
Element insulation breakdown allows current to leak to chassis. Trips at startup or after warmup (thermal expansion closes fault gap).
Test: Disconnect element, measure between terminal and chassis. Any reading = ground fault. Replace element.
Parts Cost: $50–$100 | Pro: $150–$280
2. Motor Winding Insulation Failure (25%)
EcoSilence motor winding insulation degrades from lint heat exposure. Ground fault develops. May trip immediately at startup.
Test: Disconnect motor, measure between winding terminals and motor housing. Should be open circuit (megohm range).
Parts Cost: $150–$300 | Pro: $280–$500
3. Control Board Short (20%)
Failed component on board creates direct short. Trips immediately when plugged in (before any button pressed).
Test: Disconnect board power connector. If breaker holds with board disconnected = board has internal short.
Parts Cost: $150–$350 | Pro: $280–$500
4. Moisture in Electronics (15%)
After cleaning or in very humid environments, moisture creates conductive paths. May resolve with 24-hour drying period.
Parts Cost: $0 | Pro: $89–$150
5. Wiring Damage (10%)
Chafed wire contacting cabinet. Inspect all visible wiring for damage (remove top panel).
Parts Cost: $5–$20 (repair) | Pro: $120–$250

Isolation Testing Procedure
- Unplug dryer. Remove top panel.
- Disconnect heating element (WGA). Plug in. Trip? If no = element was fault.
- If still trips: disconnect motor. Test. If holds = motor fault.
- If still trips: disconnect board main power. If holds = board fault.
- If still trips with everything disconnected: wiring fault between plug and junction points.
Safety Warning
Never repeatedly reset a tripping breaker. Each trip indicates a fault generating heat at the failure point. Identify and fix before returning to service.

FAQ
Q: My Bosch dryer trips immediately when plugged in. What is wrong?
Immediate trip (before pressing Start) = always-on circuit fault. Usually control board internal short or main wiring damage. Disconnect board to isolate.
