Amana Washer F5 E2: Lid Lock Not Engaging
F5 E2 means the lid lock mechanism attempted to engage but the feedback switch never confirmed lock position within the timeout window. The washer will not operate with an unsecured lid.
Amana Lid Lock vs. Maytag Door Lock
Amana top-load washers use a solenoid-driven lid lock — simpler and faster than Maytag's thermal wax motor actuator. The solenoid clicks the lock into position in under 1 second (Maytag's wax motor takes 15-20 seconds). However, the solenoid produces less force, so alignment issues that Maytag's stronger wax motor can overcome will prevent an Amana lock from engaging.

Causes
Lid Strike Misalignment (35%)
The metal strike on the lid must enter the lock receiver straight. Amana's lightweight plastic lid flexes more than Maytag's heavier door, changing the strike angle over time. Fix: Adjust the strike plate screws until the strike enters flush.
Worn Solenoid (30%)
The solenoid weakens after 10,000+ cycles. It buzzes when energized but cannot generate enough force to push the lock to full engagement. Fix: Replace lid lock assembly (W10404050, $25-40).
Switch Contact Wear (20%)
The micro-switch confirming engagement wears. Lock physically engages but switch does not register. Test: Manually push lock to full position. Measure continuity across switch — should be 0 ohms.
Bent Lid or Hinge Sag (15%)
A bent lid or sagging hinge changes the geometry, preventing proper strike-to-receiver alignment.
Accessing the Lid Lock
On Amana top-loaders: the lid lock mounts under the top panel, near the front edge. Remove 2 rear screws, slide the top panel back, lift. The lid lock is visible — 2 mounting screws, one wire connector.
