Maytag Refrigerator Door Gasket Replacement

Unlike a washer or dishwasher gasket fighting water, the fridge gasket only has to hold an air seal — but a small gap is enough to let warm room air leak in and run the compressor ragged.

How the magnetic seal works#

The gasket is a multi-chamber rubber extrusion with a flexible magnetic strip in its innermost chamber. Close the door and that strip grabs the steel cabinet frame, drawing the rubber tight; the several chambers flex to forgive minor door misalignment. It's held either by tucking its lip under the door-liner edge (secured by the liner screws) or by snapping into a channel around the door.

Signs it's failing#

• Sweat or condensation on the outside of the door — warm air is reaching the cold door skin through a gap.
• The fridge runs constantly — leaking warm air keeps the compressor chasing temperature.
• Visible gaps between the rubber and the cabinet where it's warped or torn.
• A failed dollar-bill test — the bill slides out with no drag.
• Frost on the freezer gasket — humid air leaking in freezes on the cold door.

The dollar-bill test#

Close the door on a dollar bill and pull it straight out at eight points — top center, bottom center, both sides, and all four corners. Each should resist with a light-magnet tug. Anywhere it slips free easily, the gasket isn't sealing there; a tired gasket often holds at most points but gaps at corners or hardened stretches, so check all eight.

Replacing the gasket#

1. No need to unplug — there's nothing electrical here.
2. Start at a top corner and pull the old gasket lip out from under the liner; on screw-held models, loosen (don't remove) the liner screws to free it.
3. Clean the channel and the frame contact face with warm, soapy water.
4. Begin the new gasket at the top corners, pressing the lip firmly home.
5. Work down both sides, keeping it straight and untwisted.
6. Finish the bottom — where most installs go wrong — then close the door and check for even compression.
7. Re-run the dollar-bill test at all eight points.

Tools: none for snap-in gaskets, a Phillips #2 for screw-retained ones, and warm water for cleaning.

Parts and cost#

A gasket that seals poorly but isn't torn can sometimes be saved: warm it with a hair dryer on low and reshape it against the frame. Maytag fridges ride on the Whirlpool platform, so gaskets cross-reference to Whirlpool W10/WP numbers — search both for price.

Keep the new one sealing#

Wipe the gasket monthly with warm, soapy water to clear residue and sticky spots, and coat it thinly with petroleum jelly every 6 months so it stays supple and doesn't grab (and tear) on opening. While you're at it, clean the condenser coils — dust and grease there can cut cooling efficiency by up to 30 percent and overwork the compressor. Give the fridge 24 hours to settle before judging temperatures, and don't fiddle with the setting during that window. Gaskets typically last 8–12 years; note that Maytag's sealed system — compressor, evaporator, condenser, and tubing — often carries a 10-year parts warranty worth checking before any sealed-system repair.
