Maytag Refrigerator Doors Misaligned? Causes
Most likely the door hinges have settled under the weight of the door and its loaded bins, or the refrigerator simply is not level — a worn hinge pin or bushing or a bent hinge bracket can also throw the doors out of line, so confirm the unit is level before adjusting any hinge.
How Maytag French doors hang#
Maytag MFI French-door models use a three-hinge system: a fixed top hinge, a middle hinge shared between the French doors and the freezer drawer, and a bottom hinge. The whole door load rides on those hinge pins and bushings, so anything that lets them settle or shifts the cabinet off level shows up as doors that no longer line up or seal evenly.
Causes at a glance#
| Likely cause | What you'll notice | Share of cases | First move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hinges settling under weight | Doors drift out of line over time | 40% | Lighten door bins, adjust hinge |
| Refrigerator not level | Both doors off relative to cabinet | 30% | Level the unit front-to-back |
| Worn hinge pin or bushing | Sagging door, play at the hinge | 20% | Replace the pin or bushing |
| Damaged hinge bracket | One door visibly askew after impact | 10% | Replace the bent bracket |

Working through the causes#
Hinges settling under weight (40%). The most common cause is gradual settling as the door and heavy bin loads bear on the hinges. The door slowly drops or leans until it no longer meets its partner. Lighten the door bins, then adjust the hinge to bring the door back into line. Refrigerator not level (30%). An unlevel cabinet makes both doors look misaligned relative to each other and the frame; a front-to-back tilt lets the doors swing on their own. Level the refrigerator with its leveling legs, front-to-back and side-to-side, before touching the hinges. Worn hinge pin or bushing (20%). The pin and bushing at each hinge carry the entire door load. Nylon bushings wear faster than bronze though they run quieter, and a worn bushing lets the door sag with visible play. The pin or bushing is replaced to restore alignment. Damaged hinge bracket (10%). A bracket can bend from an impact — a heavy object striking the open door — or from forcing a misaligned door shut repeatedly. A bent bracket holds the door askew and is replaced.
Adjust it safely#
- Have a helper on hand — Maytag MFI doors weigh 40 to 70 pounds each depending on model and loading.
- Support the door before loosening any hinge hardware so it cannot drop.
- Check level first with a bubble level on top of the cabinet, front-to-back and side-to-side.
- Lighten the door bins, then make small hinge adjustments and re-check the door gap after each.
- Confirm the gaskets seal evenly all around once the doors line up.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Why alignment matters#
Misaligned doors press the gasket unevenly, so the seal leaks where the door sits away from the frame — that causes frost buildup, higher energy use, and condensation. Correcting the alignment restores an even seal and protects the compartment temperature.
Preventing a repeat#
- Keep total door-bin weight under about 20 pounds per door on French-door models.
- Re-check level annually, especially after any flooring work.
- Do not force a misaligned door shut, which bends brackets over time.
- Distribute heavy items across both doors so one hinge does not carry the load and settle.
- Check the door gap and gasket seal after any adjustment, not just that the doors close.
- Have a worn hinge pin or bushing replaced before it lets the door sag further.
