LG Washer Thermostat Replacement
On an LG washer, "thermostat" almost always means the thermistor — an NTC temperature sensor in the tub sump — and a tE error or a wash that's the wrong temperature points to it. Test it by resistance: about 10K-15K ohms at room temperature. A true safety thermostat only exists on heater-equipped models.
Two different parts get called the thermostat, and they do different jobs.
Thermistor vs. safety thermostat#
- Thermistor (every model) — an NTC sensor in the tub sump that reports water temperature to the board, which uses it to control the hot/cold inlet valves and the heater (if fitted). When it fails you get a tE code or the wrong wash temperature. This is the part you're almost always replacing (LG 6931EL3003D).
- Safety thermostat (heater models only) — a bi-metal cutoff near the heater that opens if the water is driven above a safe maximum (typically 175–195°F). It guards against a runaway heater and rarely fails. Standard LG washers without a heater rely on your home's hot supply and just monitor it through the thermistor.

Testing the thermistor#
Cut power and reach the thermistor in the tub sump (front or rear panel, depending on model), then unplug its 2-wire connector and measure resistance against temperature:

An infinite or zero reading — or a value that's fixed no matter the temperature — means a dead sensor. Readings that jump around point to a failing sensor or a loose connector, so also check the harness back to the board.

Replacing it#
The thermistor clips into the tub-sump housing: unplug the wires, release the retaining clip, pull the old sensor, push the new one in, and reconnect — about a 10-minute job.
Before you blame the sensor#
If the washer runs cold on warm or hot settings, check the home's hot supply first. Run the hot tap at the nearest sink; if it takes a couple of minutes to get hot, the washer may be filling before hot water reaches it, so running the tap first sends hot water straight to the machine.

The safety thermostat — handle with care#
On heater models the safety thermostat is a bi-metal disc near the element, normally closed at room temperature. Cut power, disconnect its wires, and check continuity: closed at room temperature is healthy, open means it has tripped (some auto-reset, some are one-shot and must be replaced). A safety thermostat stuck closed is dangerous — the heater then runs with no upper limit and can scald, so unplug the washer and don't run hot or steam cycles until it's replaced.

The 6931EL3003D thermistor fits many LG models, but verify it against your full model number.
