LG Washer Switch Replacement: Door Lock
"Switch" on an LG washer means one of three parts — the front-load door lock, the top-load lid switch, or the water-level pressure switch — and the error code usually tells you which. A multimeter continuity test confirms it before you order.
Which switch you're chasing depends first on whether the machine is a front-loader or a top-loader.
The three switches#
- Front-load door switch — built into the door lock assembly, it reports the door as closed and locked. A failure throws a dE error, and it's usually replaced as the whole lock assembly (LG EBF61315802) rather than on its own.
- Top-load lid switch — a standalone switch that senses the lid. Older machines use a plunger in the hinge; newer ones use a magnetic reed switch tripped by a magnet in the lid (LG 6601ER1004C). When it fails the washer won't start or won't move past fill.
- Pressure (water-level) switch — a diaphragm switch linked to the tub by an air tube. It tells the board when the water reaches the set level. On older machines it's a true switch (LG 6601ER1006E) that simply opens or closes at set pressures; a failure overfills (FE) or won't fill (IE).

Testing#
All three test the same way — continuity on a multimeter across the terminals in both states. Cut power, reach the switch, unplug its connector, and check.
- Lid switch: press the plunger, or hold a magnet to the reed — the reading should flip between continuity and open.
- Pressure switch: pull the air tube and blow gently — you should hear and feel it click.

Replacing them#
- Lid switch: lift the top panel; the switch is near the lid hinge. Back out the screws, unplug the wires, and fit the new one — about a 15-minute job.
- Pressure switch: with the top panel off, it's on the rear cabinet wall. Disconnect the air tube, the connector, and the mounting screw, then install the replacement and reconnect.

A safety note#
The lid switch stops the agitator and spin basket the moment the lid opens. You can jumper it briefly to confirm a diagnosis, but never run the washer with it bypassed — moving parts under an open lid are a real hazard. And don't confuse the older pressure switch with a modern pressure sensor: the switch toggles at fixed thresholds, the sensor reports continuous readings, and the two aren't interchangeable.
How long these switches last#
Lid and door-lock switches are wear parts that usually give a decade of service before the contacts or the lock solenoid tire out; the pressure switch, with no contact riding against the drum, often outlives them. When a switch fails early, look for a mechanical cause — a warped lid that doesn't seat the plunger, a door strike that's out of alignment, or a kinked air tube starving the pressure switch of a clean signal. Fix that root cause and the replacement won't wear out on the same schedule.
