LG Washer Switch Replacement — Door, Lid, and Pressure Switches
LG washers use different switch types depending on whether the machine is front-load or top-load, and each serves a specific safety or operational function.
Switch Types by Machine Style
Front-load door switch: Part of the door lock assembly. Reports door closed/locked status. When it fails, the washer shows dE error. Usually replaced as part of the complete door lock assembly ($25-$65) rather than individually.
Top-load lid switch: A standalone switch that detects whether the lid is closed. On older models, a plunger switch in the lid hinge. On newer models, a magnetic reed switch activated by a magnet in the lid. When it fails, the washer does not start or does not advance past the fill stage.
Pressure switch (water level): A diaphragm switch connected to the tub via an air tube. Signals the board when the correct water level is reached. When it fails, the washer overfills (FE) or does not fill (IE). This is a switch, not a sensor, on some older models — it simply opens or closes at specific pressure thresholds.

| Washer fills then does not agitate/spin | Lid switch (some models) | Top-load |
| Washer overfills | Pressure switch stuck closed | Both |
| Washer does not fill | Pressure switch stuck open | Both |

Testing Switches
All three switch types are tested the same way — continuity with a multimeter. Disconnect power, access the switch, disconnect the wire connector, and test between the terminals in both switch states (actuated and not actuated).
Lid switch: Press the plunger or bring a magnet near the reed switch — should toggle between continuity and open.
Pressure switch: Disconnect the air tube and blow gently — should hear and feel the switch click.

Replacement Procedures
Top-load lid switch: Remove the top panel. The switch is mounted under the panel near the lid hinge. Remove mounting screws, disconnect wires, install new switch. 15-minute job.
Pressure switch: Remove the top panel. The switch is mounted on the rear cabinet wall. Disconnect the air tube, wire connector, and mounting screw. Install the new switch and reconnect.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG top-load washer fills but does not spin. Is the lid switch bad?
Possibly. Some LG top-load models require the lid switch to be closed during spin (safety interlock). Test the switch with a multimeter. Also check the motor coupling and shift actuator.
Can I bypass the LG washer lid switch to test it?
Briefly for diagnosis only. Never leave it bypassed — the lid switch prevents the agitator and spin basket from operating with the lid open, which is a serious injury hazard.
What is the difference between a pressure switch and a pressure sensor?
A pressure switch is a mechanical device that toggles at fixed pressure thresholds. A pressure sensor is an electronic transducer that reports continuous pressure readings. Older LG washers use switches; modern models use sensors. They are not interchangeable.
